New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Monday the outlook is largely positive for linebacker Jonathan Vilma and safety Pierson Prioleau, two players who left the field hurt against the San Diego Chargers last week and did not return.

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma is getting a second opinion on his groin injury.
Vilma, who Tweeted after the game that he would be fine and a definite go when the Saints begin the regular season Sept. 9 against the Vikings, will get a second opinion on a groin injury, Loomis told the New Orleans Touchdown Club at its first 2010 luncheon at the Embassy Suites in the Warehouse District.

"We don't think it's serious," Loomis added. "All indications are he's going to be ready to go in the opening game."
Vilma, the starting middle linebacker and an acknowledged defensive leader for the Super Bowl champs, isn't fighting for a roster spot.
Prioleau, however, is and his chances of making the 53-man roster, which the Saints must reach by Saturday afternoon, could be jeopardized by a knee he injured against the Chargers.
Loomis acknowledged Prioleau has played well in the preseason. He recovered a muffed fumble against the Houston Texans and has been a fairly reliable member of the Saints sometimes shaky kick coverage unit. At the same time, however, Loomis noted that evaluations are still being made and that final decisions in some areas - including special teams and at safety, where the Saints have seven players listed on their roster Monday - have not been made.
"I don't want to say anything one way or the other about that," Loomis said, when asked if he thought Prioleau had made the cut.

If true, that is good news about Vilma.

He is one player (like Brees on offense) that the Saints absolutely cannot afford to lose.
