Sharper put on PUP. Will miss first 6 games

METAIRIE -- New Orleans Saints veteran free safety Darren Sharper will be placed on the league’s Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, meaning he will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season while he continues to recover from offseason micro-fracture knee surgery.

That information was confirmed by league sources to NewOrleans.Com on Friday afternoon.

The team has made more roster moves ahead of Saturday's deadline to pare down to 53 players including the release of veteran QB Patrick Ramsey, defensive end Bobby McCray and center/guard Nick Leckey.

Also, wide receiver Adrian Arrington and free safety Usama Young have confirmed to NewOrleans.com that they have made the 53-man roster.

"I still got my playbook, don't I?'' Young said as he left the team's training facility.

I'll bet GW has a plan for him. And I'd rather have a healthy Sharper for the playoffs than for only 2/3's of a season.

Yeah..i agree..i just hope Jenkins gets his head out of his azz soon...i just dont have any faith in him...to me a vet at safety is a big plus..its the last line of defense...

I think putting Sharper on the PUP list is the best option. It gives Jenkins 6 games to prove if he can be a legit starter or if he needs more time to develop. It also gives Sharper the chance to really get healthy and replace Jenkins for the rest of the season and playoffs if he needs to. It also gives us a good backup in either case.

I have confidence in Jenkins to at least be decent, but I'm not yet sold if he can make the kind of game-changing plays that Sharper did. I guess we'll have to see.

I don't think they PUP him unless they were absolutely sure he would have to miss the 1st few games.

I don't think this decision had anything at all to do with Jenkins.

Rather see him miss the first 6 than to see them cut him outright.

strato 09-03-2010 04:32 PM

Yeah he was still hurting...it makes the most sense..he will be back

Choupique 09-03-2010 05:05 PM

a healed up FRESH! Sharper a few weeks from now is better than none.

NEXTPROBOWLER 09-03-2010 05:13 PM

I agree.. some sharper is better then no sharper... plus it does gives everyone a look at jenkins to see what kinda player he's going to be... im sure it didnt have anything to do with him, but a plus out of a bad situation

Don't act so surprised.... how long did it take Reggie Bush to really recover from virtually the very same procedure? It's not clear if he'll even be healthy enough after six weeks.

I'm thinking Jenkins is gonna be fine once he gets in the groove..he better hurry up..lol the seasons here!GW is pretty high on him.He said awhile back that if and when Sharper returned that Sharper would have his spot back but that Jenkins would play somewhere because "he's too good of a football player" to sit.

None of us wanted it - BUT we all knew deep down this is what was going to happen.

jprime18 09-03-2010 07:42 PM

As long as he's good by the playoffs, I'm fine.

Pete 09-03-2010 08:08 PM
