New Orleans Saints notes: Patrolling the dome, Gregg Williams stands his ground
"It was just a chance to get in there ... check the surface; make sure we're comfortable with the surroundings," he said.
But, between the lines, it seemed the main purpose of the trip was fine-tuning the artificial surface. While both the Superdome and the Saints' indoor practice facility have the same fake grass, the cushioning is slightly different and it can be changed in the Superdome. "We play with it and how firm we want it to be ... we can change that, " Payton said. Literally defending the home-field advantage, Payton offered no further details on just how firm or soft the Saints would prefer the surface but it was clear that was the main purpose of Tuesday's activity. "There's really no excuse for a guy who's not wearing the right kind of cleats," defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said. Williams stands his ground Perhaps the most publicized aspect of the Saints-Vikings game has been whether the Saints will deliver the same beating to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre that they did in the 2009 NFC championship game, and whether the Vikings will seek their own sort of payback in the way they attack Drew Brees. Vikings Coach Brad Childress has done little to deter such speculation, accusing the Saints' defense of operating in a less than kosher manner last January. But when a reporter from Minnesota broached the topic Wednesday, Williams brushed it aside before it was finished. "Nah," he said, "Brad and I are friends and all that stuff. Brad has to say what he has to say for his own team." The Saints' defense will play with a ferocious attitude and offer no apologies, Williams said, noting that is essentially his job description. "The No. 1 criteria when I was hired here by Sean was about changing the attitude of how we play defense here, " he said. "Our players are going to play hard and always are going to play hard. If they don't, they're going to stand by me." New Orleans Saints notes: Patrolling the dome, Gregg Williams stands his ground | NOLA.com |
