Saints Defense Top 10?
Face it... Our defense we beat the Vikings. The offense did just enough but it was the guys on the other side that controlled the game.
It looks like our running game is also much improved. We finally have some superior player on defense... Darren Sharper Malcomn Jenkins Jabari Greer Tracy Porter Roman Harper Jonathan Vilma Will Smith Sedrick Ellis Their are eight players with potential ProBowl talent. It seems we're finally puting together a very good defense. These guys face the #1 offense in the league everyday at practice. Consider, before the Vikings game... what kind of odds would you have taken if you could take the Saints and they couldn't score more than 14. |
Ask Kurt Warner, Brett and Payton who kicked their ass lately. Two dat games in a row against the Viqueens.
Juggernaut! Two dat! |
Lets wait and see after we get Sharper and Ingrim...also lets see how Junyah does at OL...but i think we can be better for sure..like our depth at a lot of positions..
|
I like what I see so far but lets wait and see how this group looks in a couple weeks
|
Tackling still leaves something to be desired. Too many misses, wiffs, and BIG play losses of concentration. We also need to get our DB's up to Sharper/Porter type hands. We have let multiple two-hand touches get away both in pre-season and in Thursdays game. But this was game one. I'll chalk it up to early season jitters. If we keep our GA/TA ratio in our favor, we'll be just fine. Top 10 would require some improvement.

I think we finish inbetween the 15-20 area. As much as we score, we give our opponents ample opportunites to put up points... especially once we're up by so much, the defense usually gets a bit vanilla(prevent defense which I absolutely find stupid in every level of football).

I don't think the Saints will ever play vanilla or take the pedal off. :bng: It's not their style. |
It only has to be good enough. But, with a offense that scores alot of points and goes 3 and out quite often, stats wise I don't think it's possible. If the Saints were to have a top 10 defense stats wise, I think another Super Bowl is a certainty.
|
A little too early for me to say. I'm happy the defense held, but I also saw Adrian Peterson run through the defense like a hot knife in warm butter. The Vikes started passing toward the end of the game and couldn't get it done (props to the LB, DB's and S). It makes me nervous to think what could have happened if they kept using AP and started running more play action.
I think the defense will be better than last years, but stopping the run is still yet to be determined. The good news is that we don't face AP every week. |

It depends. Lets see how we play against the 40-whiners & Atlanta.

as i was pumped and pleased i'm not putting my foot in the teethway.
|
I do think we're a top 10 defense, but I want to see a bit more of em before I decide for sure. I did vote yes though.
|
we're looking good so far :)
|
do we miss fujita yet?

Here's a couple of good defenses ...
Ravens vs. Jets - Recap - September 13, 2010 - NFL - Football - SI.com |
And we care why? All that matters is that they do their job. Rankings are....
Don't make me say it. |
A look at the Ravens and Jets defense against the run and you can see we are not in the same universe as them on defense, but of course, on offense there is no comparison. We will be between 15th and 20th at seasons end.
|
The offense didn't score 30, yet we won the game. The defense did its job Thursday night: 9/10 points, Farve 171, Peterson 87 with a long of 14. I'll take it every time we have to face the Vikes. That's the key, every week they have to take care of the task at hand. Running team or passing team they simply have to get it done that day or that night. If the offense gives them a 3 possession lead, then teir job gets easier.
|
We'll have an above average defense and the top offense which I think is the same recipe we used to get to the Super Bowl last year. On defense we should be a little better than last year, but not much better. Our first rounder went to strengthening an already solid group of corners. We won't be that much better until we get another strong DT and another LBer.jmo
|
I say Yes we do have a top 10 defense we will finish 4th in total defense!!! would be higher if our pup(s) were healthy, CBs are almost completely shut down guys (Bernard Berrian is fast as hell, he didnt exist Thursday) just gotta get better at shifting coverage on crossing routes with the LBs an Harper. Remi Ayodelle looks alot larger this year hes doin pretty well so far pwned Hutchinson on multiple playes Sed Ellis is the real deal hes blowin through the OL hopefully he keeps it up and channels his inner Norman Hand (RIP)

I can't confidently say that there are 10 defenses in the NFL better that are better the Saints ... so thinking positively I voted "Yes" on this poll

According to good statistics we were a #14 defense when healthy last year.

Suck up..lol |
I think this D can be a Top 10 or Top 12 defense. I especially liked Gregg Williams using a lot of 3-4 in the Vikings game, something the Vikes were totally unprepared for (especially LBs dropping back in coverage, and not blitzing a lot).
And with Williams' exotic schemes meant to confuse rival offenses (3-3-5, Buddy Ryan's old 46, standard 4-3, and a 4-4-3--playing the SS Harper in a LB configuration) Williams has multiple ways of doing that. And a blitz could come from anywhere (LB, CB, or S, or any combination thereof). Or they could all drop back into coverage, depending on the offense. At last count, Williams said he had 29 different personnel and alignment variations he could use on D. |
The Vikings passing game was not sharp last week. I wouldn't get too optimistic based on that one game, though our D did look good.
|
We got freight trained last night... run over and burnt.... Where is the weakness? Greg or the Players?
270 yards passing 140 yards rushing <----when will this stop? 417 total yards WTF? |
Opportunistic Defense, well coached...Affirmative
Top 10 Defense...Not so much Three major problems with our defense... One, we cannot stop the gash runs up the middle forcing opponents to pass against our strength which, can't believe this now, is our defensive backs; Ellis is a bust when you consider the move to grab him and the production in return, Harper, well the 49'ers got him in coverage against V Davis and you saw how ugly that is (Circa Chicago Game), and Vilma is one of the most skilled LB in the game, but he's not a threatening Middle Linebacker... Two, we lack a fearsome hitter at the safety position, especially strong safety position, that keeps runners from stretching for extra yards rather than turtle up (Frank Gore fell forward, PT fell back or straight down)... Third, we've got the slowest pass rush in the NFL; the FA acquisitions were nice, we've not drafted nor seriously addressed the pass rush, and this is almost a big a problem as being weak up the middle... I love our team, but I have to be honest and give tough love here... |
I think from watching the last two games, that they may give up some yardage, but that they sure end up with the ball when it counts.
|
Our problem is:
1. We blitz like crazy and never get to the QB. 2. We plug up the gaps then give up, and the RB pops out. |

I agree tho, about the run stop problem. But mostly on the goal line. If we could just stop goal line runs. |
Not after last weeks game.

it really shows when we don't get the turnovers. when we do who cares about ranking's.
