I think that the Heisman Trust should re-award the Trophy to Bush on principal. The NCAA's rules and restrictions so penalize players and reward institutions and bad intentioned "agents" that the mere act of survival by a student athlete is a violation. While one might quibble with the amount of moneys/services that may or may not have changed hands, the indisputable fact is that Reggie performed on the field. The act of disqualifying a performance for non-performance violations has little basis in equity. I had a problem with the NCAA voiding the USC championship and their victories because rewriting history to conform to transient, questionable and inconsistently applied "morality" is not a sustainable policy. No one should be taking comfort that "the system" works, because this is no system and it is profoundly broken.

Forfeiture of the trophy demonstrates that at least Bush has more integrity than the Heisman trust has demonstrated in who it has awarded, especially in the last twenty years...
Regretfully, it is a necessary consequence of Mr. Bush's judgement as a scholar athlete... But this should not be the end of it... Agents, coaches and administrators involved should personally be faced with serious, dire consequences... Further, the debate of college athletics, the scholar-athlete, and the fairness of the current NCAA and its sheltered, tenured subculture of parasites should be brought into full light and a reckoning of watershed moment of history should be brought to bear... Otherwise nothing is salvaged, nor learned from this tragedy... |
