Now we know why Sean Payton likes Garrett Hartley.
And why the New Orleans Saints coach, who wasnt exactly Job-like in his patience with kickers during his first three seasons, barely raised an eyebrow when Hartley missed a couple of field-goal attempts in the opener that wouldve given New Orleans a little breathing room in a 14-9 win over Minnesota. And why he held on to Hartley last season, even though Hartley missed the first four games on a suspension for testing positive for a banned stimulant, then was inactive the next seven games as John Carney helped the Saints stay undefeated. Obviously, Payton knows the Saints found a talent when they signed Hartley. And Hartley hasnt done anything yet to change that perception. After flubbing a couple against the Vikings, he converted all three attempts against San Francisco, including a partially tipped, non-picturesque winner from 37 yards as time expired in the 25-22 win. Hey poo-doo happens some times. Every player is oging to have a bad game - it si Ok as long as several players aren't having the SAME bad game.
Hartley looked poor the first game & awesome the second!! Thew rest of the speical teams looked great the first & were so-so (at best) the second. |

Every team is pretty much in the same boat, you live and die with your kicker.
Remember we were spoiled all those years with Morten then the roller coaster began. Bottom line with time Hartley has the mechanics to be reliable. |

Did anyone else see Coach Payton just as Hartley walked on the field. Coach Payton was walking along side him, gave him a massive high five and clearly shouted LETS GO!!!! Talk about instilling confidence, Coach knew he would come through for us.
