Peter King says Saints will audition kickers after Hartley's misses
New Orleans Saints' placekicker Garrett Hartley missed a 29-yard field goal in overtime that would have won the game for his team and sent the Atlanta Falcons home in a 2-game hole in the NFC South. Now his job is on the line.
Sports Illustrated's Peter King said on his Twitter account and on NBC's Sunday Night Football that the Saints would be bringing kickers in this week to audition for the placekicking roster spot. Here are the two tweets that King put out there after his appearance on NBC: "Just said on NBC that the Saints will audition some kickers this week. Garrett Hartley (who's missed 46, 32 and 29 yarders) is on thin ice." "Can you keep a guy who, in the span of 8 games, has lost games with 37- and 29-yard misses? That's what Sean Payton has to decide this week." He really does have a good point there because the Saints won the opening game over the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 14-9. Even making just one of those two kicks (46 or 32) would have made things a bit more comfortable and allowed a cushion. While Hartley's miss in overtime against the Falcons isn't the only reason the Saints lost; a made kick would have ended the game and won things for New Orleans sending them to 3-0 record. A 29-yard field goal is considered a chip shot and is only ten yards further than an extra point for a touchdown. Hartley's kick was pulled left very badly and it led to the decisive game-winning drive for Atlanta. List of some available free agent kickers (Photo gallery of some available kickers): Shayne Graham - Baltimore Ravens/Cincinnati Bengals Matt Stover - Indianapolis Colts/Baltimore Ravens Shaun Suisham - currently on the St. Louis Rams, a trade perhaps Mike Vanderjagt - Indianapolis Colts - hasn't played since 2007 John Carney - hey, it couldn't hurt Kris Brown - Houston Texans Peter King says Saints will audition kickers after Hartley's misses (slideshow) - New Orleans New Orleans Saints | Examiner.com |
