New Orleans Saints use new kicker and new holder vs. Carolina Panthers
Along with a new kicker, recently signed John Carney, the New Orleans Saints also used a new holder for field-goal attempts.
After using punter Thomas Morstead to hold on kicks for the first three games, the Saints turned to backup quarterback Chase Daniel to hold in their 16-14 win against the Carolina Panthers. Payton said the move was made just to shake up the operation and shouldn't be viewed as an indictment on Morstead's ability to hold for kicks. "We were just trying to look very closely at every aspect of the process," Payton said. "I think more than anything else we had time to get three good days (of practice) in. Chase is someone that has been doing it, and it was just a matter of saying, 'Hey, let's free up Thomas a little bit here.' "But it shouldn't be looked at as an indictment on Thomas. His holds were good. I just wanted to shake it up and change it." ELLIS' BIG DAY: Defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis continued an outstanding start to his third NFL season. He had a sack on the Panthers' opening drive -- his team-leading third sack of the season. He assisted on a tackle-for-loss on third-and-1 on the Panthers' second drive. He also batted down two passes at the line of scrimmage. QUICK HITS When receiver Lance Moore scored on a 4-yard reception from Brees in the second quarter, it was the first time this season the Saints had scored in the quarter. They previously had been outscored 23-0 in the second quarter this season. Usama Young recorded the first sack of his career when he tackled Carolina's Jimmy Clausen for a 4-yard loss in the second quarter. Many of the Saints and Panthers wore pink cleats, gloves, towels, caps and wristbands to support the fight against breast cancer. Brees moved ahead of Aaron Brooks into second place on the Saints' career passing list. Now with 19,427 yards, he trails Archie Manning (21,734). ROSTER MOVES: To make room for running back DeShawn Wynn, who was called up from the practice squad, the Saints released cornerback Leigh Torrence. The Saints' inactive players were offensive tackle Charles Brown, kicker Garrett Hartley, tight end Tory Humphrey, linebacker Anthony Waters, defensive end Junior Galette, Harper, Bush and Thomas. |

My first thought is that Payton is cooking up some kind of fick-fake and wants to have a guy in there who can pass the ball.

Having the backup QB holding is a much better option than the punter. That indeed does open up more options.
