Given a new lease on his NFL career, the nine-year veteran is out to prove the Washington Redskins wrong for releasing him during the offseason and the New Orleans Saints right for recently signing him to a one-year contract.

Based on Sunday’s inspired performance against the Carolina Panthers at the Superdome, when he accounted for 70 yards from scrimmage on 17 touches, he appears to be on his way to doing both.

On one touch in the second quarter, he looked like the hard-running Betts of old, flattening Panthers’ free safety Sherrod Martin in front of the Saints sideline before being wrestled down after an 8-yard run-and-catch.

“Football is one of those sports where you want to go out on your own terms,’’ Betts said Wednesday after the team's first practice in preparation for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale, Ariz. “I don’t want people to tell me I’m finished. So by being released, it kind of added a little fuel to the fire and gave me another reason to keep playing.’’

Another reason for Betts to keep playing is to win his first Super Bowl ring.

“That’s my motivation; definitely,’’ he said. “I’ve been drafted, that was a dream. I’ve been through two contracts. This is my third contract. My main focus is just winning. I just want to win. All that other stuff; all the outside stuff, I don’t care about.

“I want a ring.’’

Its this kind of talk that makes a SB team remember why they won in the first place. Betts could become a locker room inspiration. I still see the hunger in him.
