BYRAM — Students in the Byram Middle School auditorium erupted with applause and cheers Thursday when former New Orleans Saints star Deuce McAllister walked in.
But the retired running back was there to honor them on their national recognition for promoting nutrition and physical activity. Byram Middle School has received a Gold Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for meeting the HealthierUS School Challenge. It's the only school in the state, and among a few in the nation, to receive that designation. "It's a very healthy environment," said Cosby Burnet, 13. Food served at Byram Middle School is baked and not fried, he said. Students are encouraged to walk around the school after physical education classes for added exercise, he said. The award, the second-highest prize in the challenge, also comes with $1,500 for the school, according to the USDA website. "This is just the beginning of it," McAllister told the students during the assembly. "There's a lot of work yet to be done." Read the full article here...
