Following a scoreless first quarter that featured five punts, Pittsburgh put together a drive early in the second. Faced with a 3rd-and-4 from the New Orleans 12, Roethlisberger hooked up with Antwaan Randle El, who seemed to score a touchdown as he was brought down near the goal line. The Saints challenged the call, and it was determined that Randle El was brought down at the one-yard line. New Orleans' defense then came up big, stopping three runs by the Steelers to set up a 19-yard Jeff Reed field goal with 9:09 left until half.

Brees was picked off by Ike Taylor on New Orleans' second possession of the quarter. Pittsburgh was set up at the Saints' 36, but Ward was called for offensive pass interference a few plays into the drive. That eventually led to a missed 51-yard field goal attempt from Reed.

The Saints answered with a seven-play drive, which Garrett Hartley capped with a 31-yard field goal for a 3-3 game at the half.

New Orleans got the ball to start the second half and marched right down the field. Faced with a 3rd-and-1 from the five-yard line, Heath Evans caught a two-yard pass for a fresh set of downs. The Steelers were able to keep the Saints out of the end zone, but Hartley made a 23-yard field goal for a 6-3 lead with 8:24 remaining in the third.

Pittsburgh failed to convert a 4th-and-4 on its next possession, giving the Saints the ball at their own 41. New Orleans converted a trio of third downs during a 10-play drive. Meachem and Jeremy Shockey helped convert the first two third downs. On 3rd-and-1 from the 18 of the Steelers, Ladell Betts rushed for two yards. Colston caught a pass from Brees on the next play and snuck just inside the right pylon for a 13-3 margin with 12:55 to play in the fourth.
