I think Darren Smith has been playing pretty decent football. Is now really the time to put Hodge back in the lineup and hope he plays well? He\'s been pretty inconsistent throughout his Saints career.

Darrin Smith has played OK I guess. Nothing special though. I say put Hodge in there and let\'s see if we improve. We can always take him out. This defense IS better than last year. Yeah, they have given up some yardage, but look at the point total. BIG Improvement.

I was never a Hodge fan, he flew around fast and hit nothing, but he did start to look better and made a few good plays right before the injury.Lets get him out there and see with all his athletic ability if he gets a head for the game he will be something.

Question: Rook - do you think the defense has truly improved or do you think that our better stats may be attributed to any combination of the following:
A) Our opponents aren\'t nearly as explosive on offense as they were last year. B) Our offense has not made other teams play catch up and thus they do not have to run the hurry-up all game and therefore aren\'t putting up the same kind of numbers. C) Our run defense is worse, and without the stress of playing from behind teams are willing to keep our potentially dangerous offense off the field by controlling the clock and running the ball down our throats. I\'m just wondering what the new guy thinks? |

I think you can spin it anyway you want it. But if you think opposing teams aren\'t trying to put points on the board, then you are going to have a hard time convincing me of that one!!
We played poorly early on, but are you trying to tell me that our defense hasn\'t been doing a good job as of late? |

I\'d probably say that they haven\'t been great the last couple weeks. They\'ve been ADEQUATE at best. Are you gonna say that the two long TD drives by the Bucs Sunday was a fluke?
That sort of thing has been happening to this defense all year. Of course, they\'re better now than they were earlier on, but that\'s little consolation since they were so bad to start off. The simple truth is that if the offense was putting up 30 points per game like last year, this defense wouldn\'t be ranked any better. I\'m going to take the wai and see approach with these guys and root for them to get better. Hey, defense wins championships and if we CAN make the playoffs, we\'re gonna need a good, strong defense! |

Saints Defense 2003
09/07 at Seattle L 10- 27 09/14 Houston W 31- 10 09/21 at Tennessee L 12- 27 09/28 Indianapolis L 21- 55 10/05 at Carolina L 13- 19 10/12 Chicago W 20- 13 10/19 at Atlanta W 45- 17 10/26 Carolina L 20- 23 OT 11/02 at Tampa Bay W 17- 14 Points Given Up -- 205 Saints Defense 2002 09/08 26- 20 W at TB 09/15 35- 20 W GB 09/22 29- 23 W at CHI 09/29 21- 26 L at DET 10/06 32- 29 W PIT 10/13 43- 27 W at WAS 10/20 35- 27 W SF 10/27 35- 37 L ATL 11/10 34- 24 W at CAR Points Given Up -- 233 At the same point last season we had given up 28 more points. You can say that the teams that we have held to a respectful number don\'t have good offenses, but neither did a lot of those teams that put up big numbers last year. Check \'em out. We held one team to under 20-points last year. Really -- Just one. I\'m not buying into all of this stuff about teams trying to run the clock out and not doing everything they can to score. I think most teams want to take long mythodical drives that eat time off the clock and score at the end. |

OK, take away the 40 points our offense gave up on turnovers in the first 20 minutes to the Bears and Detroit in those two games and our defense has actually given up more points this season.
C\'mon Billy, what matters for defenses? Stopping the run, limiting big plays, not losing the time of possession game, take aways... Tell me this. Are we giving up more or less rushing yards? Is the time of possession in our favor or against us? Think about it Billy. If you\'re playing Carolina, what is your strategy going into the game? Score fast and make them play catch up b/c they can\'t do it. If you\'re playing teams like the Rams or Saints, what is your game plan? Control the clock and keep the explosive offenses on the the sidelines. Don\'t give them the chance to score b/c they can do it fast. You don\'t do that by throwing the ball. That is going to make the defense look better. I honestly think the front four are improved. Derrick Rodgers is playing well. The Jay Bellamy/Victor Green experiment is working well. The rest of our secondary is not good. Nor are the rest of our linebackers. Tampa Bay, a bad offense that was getting shut down all day long, proved last week that this defense is still just as suseptible as it was last year. They score on a 97 yard drive in 3 minutes!!! This defense can get shred just like last year\'s. [Edited on 5/11/2003 by WhoDat] |
