Fire Reggie Bush as a punt returner
Is anyone else ready to call the "Reggie Bush as a punt returner" experiment, a failure?
Thank God the Saints have players like Michael Jenkins, Bush owes him big-time. Payton should have known that Bush wasn't ready to start fielding punts; he had already dropped a TD pass from Brees earlier in the game. And who had the bright idea of using Tracy Porter as a punt returner? The Saints have enough trouble keeping the secondary healthy as it is. And why hasn't the coaching staff addressed Lance Moore falling backwards as he catches a punt? He does it virtually everytime he fields a punt and it is only a matter of time until the ball gets away from him and the defender recovers it. The Saints desparately need to draft a punt returner |
If the Falcons dont sure up their punt return coverage and Reggie can hold on to the ball, I think you will change your mind after the Falcons/Saints game. He's rusty...give him another game or so. This coming from a Falcons fan.

You could be right. IMO,Payton should have used Bush as a RB to get him used to handling the football before using him full time.
|
he's got an extra 3 days to work on ball handling. You know SP will make him shower with a football in his hands
|
Something needs to be said to Bush about trying to turn a play into a circus act with a good lead. That was him trying to redeem himself in the spotlight, nothing more.

Patrick Peterson for punt returner??

Maybe someone should learn the names of players on the team before expressing ignorance! IMHO :dunce: |

I don't have a problem with Bush returning punts whatsoever. He just needs more consistency on a return to return basis. As far as Porter is concerned, if only he weren't so fragile, I would definitely LOVE to see him back there as he was a great return man in college. I don't like Moore back there... he just doesn't have that big playmaking ability you look for. I'd like to see Meachem get a shot back there... he's not shifty but he's the type that makes one cut and goes.
Before we even talk about drafting a return man(which I'm not for anyways... dime a dozen), how about we land a good special teams coach first. We have plenty of options already on the roster... and if that person isn't, UDFA or FA would be the way to go for me. |
Did anyone notice the look on Payton's face after Reggie broke his leg. He knew he should not have put Reggie in there for returning that punt. It was windy and our special teamer's can't block the coverage teams. He wasn't concerned about Bush he was pi$$ed off at his decision to play him. Payton is very hard on himself(and his Juicy Fruit gum).

I now cringe everytime Bush gets the ball, either on a punt, a run, or a reception.
I have lost almost all faith in Reggie. I'm convinced that he either takes a drastic pay cut, or we simply move on. He can be replaced. |
Thing that gets me about Reggie is he has made big plays as a return man both amazingly good and horrendously bad. Sometimes in the same game. I know he's a threat but never know for which team. Drives me crazy.

I partly blame Reggie for trying to hit a homerun on every return and not focusing on making the catch, but I also blame ST coaching for some of Reggie's blunders. A good ST coach would set some perimeters and guidelines of when to run, when to fair catch, and when to let it go. And he would make sure those guidelines were met. Every Saints' punt return and punt coverage looks like backyard football to me.
IMO, if we're gonna keep McMahorrible as ST coach, then we need to keep a sure handed skill person like Lance fielding punts. |

He is back to his old ways, instead of running. Reggie catches the ball and then this: http://www.gifanatics.com/files/Breakdancing.gif |
Just FYI Porter was back there to return that punt against the Bengals because they thought it might be a fake...he'd be there to make a last ditch tackle in that situation
Without wading into the thick swamp of Reggie discussions, I think part of Reggie's problem on punt returns has a LOT to do with the X's and O's and blocking, of which he is getting almost none. Remember when Payton put his hand in to tweak and take charge of special teams during our playoff run last year, the very next week Reggie took one to the house against AZ. You can rag on him for juking/dancing if you want to, but on that one he made an Arizona player slip on his backside just by psyching him out with one of those moves, and he had TONS of great blocking all the way down the field... go watch it on Youtube, watch the blocking, you will see guys attacking Cardinals all over the place, it's like an organized riot! ...But he can't do anything on a punt return if he has 3 guys instantly in his face. |
Fair enough but he is bringing in "Play Maker" pay. Not I can run with no one in front of me pay.
Garrett Hartley could take one to the house with enough good blocking. |
I would say put devery back there seen as he hasn't been involved in the Offense much recently, but i would be more nervous with him back there than reggie. I agree he needs better blocking, but running sideways just doesn't do anything, im expecting reggie to crank the play up soon, he better do to earn how much hes scheduled to make. I'm expecting play like last year vs cardinals in playoffs.

When you survey the field, and sideways is your best option, its time to wave your hand for a fair catch. When the punter does his job and traps you against the side line at the 12 yardline, its time to wave your hand and let your team start on the 12 and not at the 2. Reggie's troubles look more like ST coaching troubles to me. Someone ought to be putting their hand on Reggie's shoulder and saying, "Look son...".
