Cincinnati -- Grading the New Orleans Saints and their performance against Cincinnati in the Saints 34-30 win. Offense -- 3.5 fleur de lis Another outstanding performance from quarterback Drew Brees and running back Chris Ivory; wide receivers Robert Meachem and Marques Colston and tight ends Jimmy Graham and Jeremy Shockey made big catches. The Saints gained 436 yards and won in the fourth quarter. It would appear a four fleur-de-lis game. As players noted afterward, however, the team was plagued by penalties, and Brees blamed them for putting the offense in situations that left them 1-of-8 on third downs. They also lost the turnover and time of possession battles, albeit narrowly. On most Sundays, Brees noted, a statistical ****tail like that indicates a loss. Full article below... He wrote "...uncharacteristically sloppy tackling...". Has he been watching the same Saints team that I have? The tackling has been terrible ALL season. It rises and falls but we haven't been able to nail that one down yet. I wish I knew where to get missed tackle numbers - yards after touch on the defensive side of the ball. No pass rush on Kitna or Palmer. They both did what they wanted to do. This is not the time of year for it. Low grade for the defense and special teams is spot on.

The poor tackling has probably led to the lower defensive numbers. The Saints have gotten away from the wrap up form tackle and are doing the "Mike McKenzie" spear tackle which is ineffective.(and is also illegal in Rugby) Unfortunately, our rookie corner back is rather fond of it.
By the way could Scott Shanle get any slower? |
