New Orleans Saints bring in officials for practice to make 'point of emphasis'
New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton invited a group of officials to monitor the Saints' practices the past two days to help make a "point of emphasis" after the team committed a season-high 11 penalties for 100 yards in Sunday's 34-30 win at Cincinnati.
Though the officials aren't a NFL crew, they are locally-based officials who are available within the NFL rules. Payton said he has had officials at regular-season practices in the past, but it's rare. Payton and players said there weren't many specific rules that needed to be explained, but it is helpful for players to be able to talk with them between snaps about what they're looking for and what they see in certain situations.
