Our Defense Was God Awful Today - WTF 41 pts allowed?

What a time to stink it up on defense. It might be a good thing after all ... we need mo' bettah bodies on defense. Sharper's a goner, so are some of our linebackers, and we need help on the Dline, and more depth in the backfield.

So how's the draft looking for us talent wise based on what might be available?

CheramieIII 01-08-2011 09:00 PM

Maybe we should hope that Greggo takes the Denver job or any other job that comes along. We've given up too many points this season.

rich006 01-08-2011 09:16 PM

I agree Sharper looked bad along with Harper. I wouldn't be surprised if Sharper is gone next year, but he's not that expensive and probably still good enough to be MJ's backup. However, I don't think there's any need for wholesale changes on D. I say draft BPA and look for diamonds in the rough just like we've been doing for the last several years.

We were 19 points a game this season. I'll take that every year if offered. That's 1 touchdown and 1 field goal each half of a professional football game. Our skill sets are lacking. Pass rush/sacks lacking. Speed at linebacker lacking. Sharper's done. Harper is pretty much done. Greer and Porter need a shot in the arm. Our draft and FA should be heavily weighted on the defensive side of the ball. That 67 yarder should be the motivation and foundation for building next years defense.

I had y'alls D in a playoff league, got me -4 points ! who woulda figured !

lynwood 01-08-2011 09:22 PM

I hope we keep GW. We have been a better team overall with him. Just need some upgraded players.

breesfan27 01-08-2011 09:23 PM

You win some, you lose some. Can't expect to win, when half our squad is on IR. We'll bounce back and get it next year, no doubt!

niteadept 01-08-2011 09:32 PM

Think we kept looking for the magic in that old silk hat of GW's. Guess we should have found Frosty instead.... Injuries killed us and lackluster performances knocked us off balance. Still, no excuses, we did not bring our A game and we lost as a result.

I agree. There was overall improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Turnovers/takeaways were down, sacks were down, but we had better overall play. No doubt, next year we will be even better with GW at the helm with a few upgrades. Back to fundamental tackling would go a long long long long way.

saintsfan1976 01-09-2011 12:06 AM

Harper is a run-support safety, not a coverage safety. Good job by Seattle to exploit it.

Can't put it on Sharper. Injuries put the game plan in jeopardy.

darstep 01-09-2011 12:11 AM

Sharper is done. Harper can't even cover a tight-end. They've done well for us but we need some youth back there to upgrade that piece of the puzzle.

gocowboysgo 01-09-2011 12:12 AM

The Saints defense was Dallas Cowboys esque.

cargojon 01-09-2011 12:13 AM

Youth is not Harper's problem - he's 28 and was drafted in 2006. the problem was his thick neck was preventing proper blood flow to his friggin brain today.

Sharper has suffered this year. Harper improved but was asked to do more than he could today. Youth is needed, but Jenkins is the answer. Usama and Torrence are on the outside looking in next year.

We got run on like swiss cheese this season.

If the run game of our opponent is hot as hell, our swiss cheese defense runs like FONDUE!

Budsdrinker 01-09-2011 10:59 AM

Sharper is still not 100% healthy from is knee surgery so I might give him another chance in training camp. We had some questionable play calling yesterday on both sides of the ball. The TD by Stokley we had a LB trying to cover him, what the hell was GW thinking. Stokley may not be a speed demon but he is faster than any LB on our team. Harper can't cover, we all know that. He was better this year than in the past but yesterday he reverted to Roman of the past couple years. We need DE's, DL and OLB's in a bad way. Will Smith couldn't handle a rookie with 2 bad ankles yesterday that's pretty sad.

neugey 01-09-2011 11:02 AM

Silver lining - the awful defense likely made GW's stock drop, so maybe less likely he'll get offered a HC job.

This was easily the worst defensive performance in at least 2 years, I think it was an abberation.

lumm0x 01-09-2011 12:01 PM

Defense cost us this game. It's over.

With that said, getting rid of Gregg Williams is not the answer. My god, we live and breath the aggressiveness of this guy all year and this loss has most people kicking him out on his ear? Alot of you sound like the cybil Falcons fans knee jerking after every loss.

We have some serious holes in the personnel of the defense even when healthy. With the injuries the holes are more obvious and exploitable and frankly we just didn't rise to the occassion and a veteran QB along with a lot of heart from every other Seahawk just out gutted us for 3 hours.

Harper is the perfect box safety who can handle most TE's if the over the top support is there. Sharper didn't have the range we needed that Jenkins could have provided. Porter and Greer are still starters. They played well, made some nice tackles and coverage. We never addressed the Shanle position nor the loss of Fujita. Dunbar is great depth. He is not a starter. Neither is any other OLB on our roster. 2 glaring position problems. Alex Brown, same thing. Good depth, not a starter anymore. We need a pass rush without a blitz and Will Smith alone is not enough.

36 pts should be enough to win any game. This one was on the defense. Man to man we got out played and Seattle came up with some killer plays, not ones we could have schemed to stop and the players on this field just didn't have the instincts to recognize them or adjust. Hell on that final Lynch TD run please tell me what defensive play call Williams could have put in to prevent 8 guys blowing the tackle on him? We had 8 guys get their hands on Lynch and fail to make the tackle. It was a complete defensive self destruction. Not Gregg Williams.

Damn, we looked really bad yesterday, but there's no need in going that low!

cajun911 01-09-2011 01:58 PM

Yeah our defense was terrible. Our pass D was getting burnt like toast. Mix that with bad special teams and no running game and you get a ticket home. That's it, we need to shake some things up in the off season.

Sinner 01-09-2011 02:08 PM

We just were not hungry this year - Except for Drew, nobody played with fire consistently. Injuries happen because of that as well - full bellies from last year's party.

Great point ... on replay I noticed a few Saints not giving full effort... that last run TD by Seattle comes to mind. Also, the post game interview of Drew and SP showed they were pissed; Drew saying he should have scored TD's on all possessions (class way to shoulder the loss). The reality, of course, is the lackluster play of the D. 36 points points ought to be enough to win a game.
