Rivers Gives Props to Brees.

Hi Everybody.

Today Philip had a conference call to talk to season ticket holders. A question he was asked is "are there any former Chargers quarterbacks that had an impact on your game?"

His answer was "I've grown to appreciate Dan Fouts even more. He's a hall of famer and he broadcasts all of our games. Talking to him each week is aprivilege. He had the feel for this this town and obviously played at a high level. Even more recently was Drew Brees. He was a team mate of mine and one thing I've always took from Drew is that he's a true pro. He went about things the right way. The way he prepared, the way he worked out, the way he did things and that was always something I took pride in. But getting there and getting to see a different side while I was on the bench just further instilled it in me that that's the way you have to go at it to be a pro."

Anyway... as a Die Hard Chargers fan, Drew will always be one of my all time favorites. I saw every one of his home games from 2002 to 2005. I've seen every one of Rivers home games since.
I can't say who I like better until both have hung up their pads. Though I can say that I'm happy for Brees to not only have the success he's had but that it happened for a class act franchise with class act fans!

If any of you would like to hear it, it's right here. You can forward it to 53:28 to get to just that question.

Take care and here's to meeting in the Super Bowl some day!!!

Thanks for posting. That type of attitude will take Mr. Rivers a long way in this league with the talent he's been blessed with.

GeauxForMore 02-19-2011 10:06 AM

Please beat the Raiders down next year.

RailBoss 02-19-2011 11:35 AM

Hey Bolt I think I understand why you visit with us. I know if Drew left The Saints I would still support him on another team if the unthinkable happened.
He is one of a few players that leave a lasting impression on you.

QBREES9 02-19-2011 01:05 PM

Drew is all around the best. Thats was very nice of Phillip to say those things. The Chargers made a big mistake letting Drew go. I thank them for that.

foreverfan 02-19-2011 01:12 PM

It happened to Brees and the same thing can be said about Rivers.
Until you win a championship, you will not be considered among the best.

I'm not sure if the comparison is fair, but that how the experts look at it.
All you have to do is look at the QBs that won the past 2 Superbowls.

Rivers comparing himself to Brees is like Jim Piersall comparing himself to Mickey Mantle.

BOLTS4LIFE 02-19-2011 01:48 PM

I come to this forum occasionally because I do like the Saints. I always have and I attended a Saints/Falcons game at the Super Dome in 93. It wasn't till then that I realized what a huge rivalry that is.
And yes, Brees going to the Saints and being a big part of their recent success adds to my interest in them.

Saint_LB, Rivers did not compare himself to Brees or did anybody else for that sake. He said that as a team mate he admired Drew's work ethic, leadership, preparation, etc. and that it made him realize what it takes to be a pro.

strato... at this point, I have to agree. In fact Rivers himself agrees. He's mentioned before that he's got to get a ring to be among the best. You can have great stats and go to the HOF but nobody (especially of great caliber) wants to end up like Marino, Fouts, Moon, etc.

GeauxForMore... we all hated getting swept by the Retards last season. Especially when we had a 13 game win streak over them. Stupid Norv!!!

Danno, you're welcome and glad you enjoyed it.

Anyway, two completely different quarterbacks but also two of the best in the business today. I'm happy for Drew and I hope that Rivers gets a ring before he hangs his pads up.

LOL, that's OK strato. Though they are our biggest rivalry, I have friends who are Raiders fans.

I love going to that game but in the late 90s early 2000s, it was bad. Thugs from LA would come to the parking lot that didn't even have tickets and didn't know anything about football. These sorry pieces of trash wouldn't think twice about punching a girls in Bolts. In fact, a Chargers fan was stabbed by a Raiders fan at the game in 99. PATHETIC!

Though since those times, we've had more football fans in Black and Silver attend as opposed to those idiots.

RailBoss 02-19-2011 07:03 PM

Yeah QBREES9 it was nice of The Chargers to send Drew out the door. But let's not forget some of his other Charger friends like Michael Turner, LaDanian Tomlinson not to mention Marty Bowl. In my opinion AJ Smith could be more of a problem for San Diego than Norval Eugene Turner.

This I'll agree with. Mainly because nobody else would have picked up Norv as Head Coach. Especially when we could have had Rex Ryan. Grrrr!!!
On the other hand, I was OK with Marty though I would have been fine with releasing him for somebody who can get us to the big game. Norv is a step backwards.

Though I don't see Michael Turner being a mistake. It was either him or release LT. One team wasn't big enough for both of them and LT was in his primes at that time.
Same way either Brees or Rivers had to go. As good as Brees is, you don't draft a Top 5 pick to ride the bench.

Though I am angered with the current release of LT.

Wish we had your coach. LOL!

Though I don't like AJ, I have to disagree that Norv is not the problem. He was handed a 14-2 team that was fully loaded and in 4 seasons, all he has to show for it is 3 playoff wins. If he at least got the Chargers to the Super Bowl, I'd say "he achieved the minimum." He hasn't.

No surprise... what did he do for the Redskins and Raiders? NOTHING!

Since you like jokes, I've got a good one!

Since that Super Bowl appearance season in 2002... 36-92! :D

Next season they'll get at least 10 losses and have made a great achievement... over 100 losses in 9 season!

And don't forget (I'm sure you haven't), nearly every expert on the planet agreed that the Chargers had more talent top to bottom than any other team in the entire NFL.

I admit I'm biased because I'm a HUGE Shottenheimer fan, even though I probably still can't spell his name right. :D

i'm glad your saying it strato. because thats the news i would have to tell bolt. the choke fact seems to bite the chargers everytime u think this is the year, i give up on them. blame aj , norm, the kicker or rivers it just does'nt come together.

I was very happy when Marty came here cause making bad teams good is his specialty.

Cleveland was a mess and he was one weird fumble away from getting them to the Super Bowl.

Kansas City was a mess and he got them to the playoffs. IMO they were not a good team either. Without Neil Smith and Derrik Thomas (bless his heart) they were terrible. Coaching was the reason for their success.

My Chargers were a mess and he got us to the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. I think we would have had a Super Bowl title by now if we kept him.

But Norv is not our Offensive Coordinator.

As Head Coach, he came to the Chargers at 58-82-1 in the regular season and 1-1 in post season. That is a horrible resume!

A lot of fans wanted Marty gone after that home playoff loss in 2006 BUT had they known that Norv would be the replacement, they would have spoke differently, and they do today.
Though I like Marty, I would have been fine with releasing him for somebody capable of getting the Chargers to the Super Bowl and winning it. They didn't.

And yes... every season I hear from Raiders fans "how many rings do you have?" I ask them "WHAT GOOD HAVE YOUR RINGS DONE FOR YOU LATELY?!!!"

Yup. That's why I don't make predictions anymore.

Though I feel good that next season we'll have Vincent Jackson the whole season and with the numbers Rivers puts up... that's got to take us further sometime.

Cowboys did it despite of Switzer, we can do it despite of Norv.

I wouldn't mind having him here as OC but as HC... forget it!

Though our Special Teams were awful last season, there were still several games we should have and could have won despite of them.
Before last season, we had one of the best Special Teams in the league for the last 4-6 years. Under the same ST coach too.

BOLTS4LIFE 02-20-2011 03:00 PM

Hey strato,

I do have to admit that the Raiders were getting me concerned about this coming season but I think firing Cable is going to push them back again.

Best record they've had in 8 seasons and 5 coaches later. Got to love Al!!! :D

Yeah, I know you guys had problems when it came to field goal attempts but did you have problems with blocked punts and giving up too much on kick off returns?

As for our kicker... Kaeding is money in the regular season but horrible in the post season.

Hey, I love Al!

Raiders fans want him gone... Chargers fans want him to live forever! LOL!

RailBoss 02-20-2011 05:29 PM

Since the 90's after Art Shell left the only life that team had was under Gruden. Al Davis at his demented stage of life causes more damage to that team. Cable was okay but his off field situations were out of control. Top of the off the wall owners list, Al Davis is at the top then Jerry World and Danny Boy and the new addition the greedy Richardson. Speaking of Jon Gruden if Coach Peyton does get swayed by the lure of Jerry World he would be my first choice to take over. However I like things just the way they are now!

Saintswrath 02-21-2011 01:40 PM

I don't have a problem with the Charger's, other than them giving us Drew Brees nothing else really sticks out significant about them to me but, they are a good team and deserve a championship one day.. But they are in Drew's era right now so they'll have to sit on the back-burner for now.

your right bolt about the predictions part. i never understood v.jackson reasoning for the holdout now hes really here for a year because who's going to give 2 #1s for him when they would'nt bite for a trade. one thing is he will be rich. or more richer.

ClintSaints 02-25-2011 10:53 AM

It's too bad Rivers is stuck with Norv Turner. That's a crying shame.

+1

Rivers is a whiner. I don't like his demeanor on the field. He isn't in the same league as Cool Brees.

It was nice of him to speak well of Drew, but then who ever bashes on Drew?
No one. They can't.

papz 02-26-2011 08:19 AM

Jerry Richardson disagrees.
