Saints sign Shaun Rogers!!!!

The New Orleans Saints have signed free agent defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday.

Rogers' deal is worth $4 million, a league source told ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Rogers, a former three-time Pro Bowl player, was cut on Feb. 9 after playing sparingly during the 2010 season due to ankle, hip and elbow injuries. He had been scheduled to make $5.5 million in 2011 with a $500,000 roster bonus.

Lost in the news about Rogers at the bottom of the article, Hartley to sign an extension Wednesday for 5 years.

I'm sure this will come with mixed emotions, but I like the kid. Glad to see him sticking around.

We still need to draft Temple's Muhammad Wilkerson or Oregon's Stephen Paea...

WVSaint 03-01-2011 09:44 PM

i was thinking the same thing with paea. he has supposedly slipped down boards due to his knee injury. i dont think it would be a bad idea at all to draft him and let him learn the first few months of the season. DTs usually take a year or so to come up to speed anyway, it could be a long term solution to the DT problem. Maybe the front office is thinking that Shaun signing a one year contract could fill that space.

SmashMouth 03-01-2011 10:00 PM

DT Stroud's signing with New England likely precipitated this.

GeauxForMore 03-01-2011 10:11 PM

Great move. We are finally fixing our weak link. I have a feeling the secondary is going to get a lot more picks this year. If there is one.

Speedy Ron 03-01-2011 10:14 PM

love it. he killed us last year

RaginCajun83 03-01-2011 11:24 PM

WHO DAT Championship, way to go Loomis

I know it isn't necessarily news at this point, but wanted to post this link.

Saints sign Rogers and tender offers to 10 players - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

EDIT: Notice there is a tender offer in there for Pierre, which means management still has faith in him.

Crusader 03-02-2011 12:25 AM

This is a great move. He will likely be a starter at 1-tech drawing the double team to help Big Sed get pressure in the middle.

It also gives the Saints more flexibility in the draft. Now DT isn't a MUST have.

Personally I'd like for the Saints to look for a DE in the first round. I still have faith Casillas is the solution at OLB.

Crusader 03-02-2011 12:26 AM

Good! It would have been folish to let Hartley go. He's really developing into a fine kicker.

MatthewT 03-02-2011 12:59 AM

I think Hartley is going to be fine. He did have his struggles, but I like the way he kept his head up and rebounded.

NEXTPROBOWLER 03-02-2011 01:06 AM

i co-sign to that, i think casillas is the answer and now we can take the best player available at de or rb... but i dig the signin, Roger Dat!

ClintSaints 03-02-2011 01:46 AM

Awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome!!!! What a wonderful piece of great news!!!!

Here come the Saints!!!!

Belair57 03-02-2011 02:21 AM

HELL YEAH

dizzle88 03-02-2011 05:18 AM

NFL network just reported that Shaun Rogers turned down a 6M offer from a team because he wanted to join us!!!
How good is it that players are looking at this team, like it's the one where they can do great things with a great organisation!!

subguy 03-02-2011 06:43 AM

Good move

I agree......or Ingram if he lasts.

papz 03-02-2011 07:15 AM

Wow... 4 million. I figured it would be less with some incentive clauses built in. Nonetheless, if we get a motivated Shaun Rogers next to Ellis, and draft an effective pass rusher in the draft, our defense could get ugly... in a good way.

Luda34 03-02-2011 07:54 AM

oh yeah we got a vet DL now get a good
R1.LB
R2.DE OR DT
R3.RB
R3.DT

papz 03-02-2011 08:00 AM

It's going to take a lot of draft picks, this year and next, to move up that high to acquire Miller. To move into the top seven all the way down from where we're at is going to cost his this year and next year's 1st round pick imo.

Tthis idéa has grown on me. The more I see from him the more he seems like a well rounded humble young man, with great football skills. I'd like that pick.

SapperSaint 03-02-2011 09:12 AM

Love the Rogers pick up! I think we are going to be fine at LB. IMO I feel we need to look at DT, OL, and secondary.

I am offically throwing a name into the 2012 Draft (If we are still here), Stephen Davis QB, USM. I want this guy to learn everything from Drew to be Drew's replacement.

TheDeuce 03-02-2011 11:29 AM

I love this pickup as long as he's motivated to win a SB. Nothing worse than a lazy DT, but he is one of the best in the league when he tries.

right - on strato the draft has a hand full of good olbs,

st thomas 03-02-2011 12:47 PM

its not far fetched if a good db or safety is there at 24 payton snatches one?

Rugby Saint II 03-02-2011 12:54 PM

I'm not excited. If Rogers wants to practice and play with the team I might reconsider. But from what I understand he was unable to practice even one time last season due to various injuries.....I may be be wrong but, that's what I read. If he is the same player just older what makes him so valuable to us?
Our FO seems to have a knack for retreads so I'm behind the move........I'm just not excited about it. I'm waiting for the season to develop and see how he does. It would be nice to have an impact player next to Big Sed.

i'm sure if this guy don't practice he won't earn a penny of that 4 mill i'm not worried if the front office we have that sqeezes pennys signs him its on to something.

73Saint 03-02-2011 02:23 PM

I like the move. I also Like the fact that he took $2mil less than what was offered by another team. He's played w/ the Lions & Browns, and hungry to play w/ a winner. I see that translating to more fire, intensity and work ethic., If he remains healthy it will be a good move, IMO.

CheramieIII 03-02-2011 02:57 PM

I guess we're going defense end, OLB or RB in the 1st round.

Danno 03-02-2011 03:53 PM

A 1 year deal is interesting.

I doubt thats what Rogers wanted, but maybe it says something about our organization that he signed a 1-year deal.

Maybe he views us as a team that believes that if you produce, we'll work out something better with you for next year.

Or...

He thinks he'll pocket 4 million, play well, and land a 3-4 year deal with someone next season.

The pressure was probably all on him since without a contract before March 3rd, he has no health benefits at all.

I'm thinking the second. Not only does signing here give him an opportunity for a ring, if he plays well he could land that last contract. Regardless of how he's thinking, he should be very motivated to play this upcoming season... and Ellis is going to have a monster year because of it.

nicebush25 03-03-2011 05:24 PM

What's up with Remi Ayodele and anthony hargrove? Are they still on the team?

pherein 03-03-2011 06:08 PM

76 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2008, OHHHH YYYAAAAA!!!!
