Smith quietly paving the way
Saints officials say 4-year veteran FB Pro Bowl contender

It's no coincidence the Saints have had a 1,000-yard rusher in each of Terrelle Smith's four seasons as the starting fullback.

His punishing lead blocks have been an integral and often overlooked factor behind the success of the Saints' rushing attack. The four-year veteran is a big reason Deuce McAllister is having another Pro Bowl season.

"I don't play a statistical position, so I really take a lot of pride in it," Smith said. "I don't boast or brag. I just do my job. I just try to give Deuce the biggest holes I can and, so far, it's working."

Smith, who does not have a carry, has five receptions for 25 yards this season.

"A lot of times you don't hear about or see the fullback," McAllister said. "Until we win consistently, the fullback is going to get overlooked. But Terrelle is under-appreciated in the league overall."

Saints officials believe Smith is a strong candidate for a Pro Bowl berth.

Tampa Bay's Mike Alstott has been chosen the NFC fullback in the last six Pro Bowls. But a neck injury has sidelined him for most of this season, leaving the door open for Smith and others.

"I think he's one of the top five fullbacks in the league," Saints coach Jim Haslett said. "I would think Terrelle deserves to be in there. . . . People should look at what the guy behind him (McAllister) has done."

What would a Pro Bowl berth mean to Smith?

"It would be the best feeling in the world," Smith said. "I might cry. I might shed a tear. I've been through a lot in life, and you can't get any higher than that, except to win a Super Bowl."
