The New Orleans Saints are waiting until after the NFL's labor dispute clears up to start working on a new deal with tailback Reggie Bush. But Coach Sean Payton said he eventually expects the Saints and Bush to work something out.
Clearly, Bush will need to take a significant pay cut from the $11.8 million salary he is due in 2011. But Payton believes that both the Saints and Bush will be the best fit for one another once they agree on his true market value. "He's a guy that we feel will be a part of our team," Payton said during a media session at the NFL league meetings Tuesday at the Roosevelt Hotel. "I think that has nothing to do with the current CBA or any of the other things. It's just that as we finished the season and begin to look at our roster and begin to look at targets and how our own team fits, he's a guy that we want in the fold. So he's a guy that we had a lot of dialogue with prior to this period of time. I think that's something that will take a little bit of time once we're operating again and talking with the players and agents, but I think that's something that has a chance to get done. "I think there will be a number. We just have to find that number that both sides are comfortable with." Bush seems to be willing to play ball with the Saints, which is a good sign. Oftentimes players' pride gets in the way when they're asked to take a paycut. But Bush seems to understand that his market value isn't the same as it was when he was the No. 2 overalld raft choice coming out of USC in 2006. At this point, all I'm really concerned with is whether we have a football season or not. I've been positive throughout this entire process, but am starting to think that was a naive way of looking at things.
But besides that, I have no problem seeing Reggie re-sign with us. Hopefully the new contract will be loaded with incentives, and Regg will have the break-out year we've all been hoping for... |

I'm happy just to hear something football related that is not related to the lockout.
I'm all for Reggie staying with the team. Obviously, Loomis is still working on things football related even though a lockout is in effect. Great! Lets get all those contract deals sewn up so as soon as the offseason resumes, contracts are on the table waiting to be signed. Drew, Reggie, Coach P and the rest of our ballers. |
