NFL Announces Compensatory Draft Choices

Saints receive one compensatory pick.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 221 choices in the seven rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft (April 28-30), which will kick off in primetime for the second consecutive year.

I can't remember the last time the Saints received a compensatory pick. I'll take it. It appears that it will be pick 242 after the 7th round and while it might not warrant celebrating with champagne it is one more pick. Let's hope that the Saints can continue the trend of picking up late round gems. And maybe some early round studs as well.

That's pretty cool. You never know when another Marques Colston will pop up.

So we get the 21st compensatory pick out of 21. Figures.

Even the NFL knows losing Fujita was obviously meaningless.

Yep, shurnuff.

But, as someone else pointed out, its a bit more significant this year since no teams can sign UDFA's.

Makes it a tad more valuable than the typical "8th" round pick.

Am I understanding this correctly? We basically get our pick of the best of the rest. I'll take first shot at UDFA's on the Saints radar.

Good news IMO. There always seems to be a few guys the Saints target immediately after the draft, and getting a guaranteed shot at our choice is nice.

Sort of, the 7th round comp picks go in order of finish, not in the order awarded.
