As NFL coaches fall, candidates are abundant Dec. 11, 2003 Dan Reeves is the first coach to fall. Not shocking, but the timing of his abrupt dismissal by the Atlanta Falcons will trigger a lot of activity in the next month or so. When one domino goes down, the others follow. Jim Fassel of the Giants could be next. Dick Jauron in Chicago, Dave McGinnis in Arizona, Bill Callahan in Oakland and Gregg Williams in Buffalo appear to be on the shakiest ground. Dan Reeves is the first coach to be fired this season ... which places him on the list of candidates for other jobs. Other coaches who could feel the heat by the end of the season include Jim Haslett in New Orleans, Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego, Dave Wannstedt in Miami and, perhaps, Mike Holmgren in Seattle. However, one team official said that owners and general managers may be a little hesitant about swinging the ax so freely because "they're not convinced that the next guy they hire will be any better ... the fact that Steve Spurrier (Redskins) and Butch Davis (Browns) have struggled hurts a lot of the college hotshots." Sounds like what we need. He\'s got my vote as the number 1 candidate. |

1. Lovie Smith, St. Louis Rams -- There\'s a tremendous aura about this guy that smacks of leadership. There\'s no way he wouldn\'t command the respect of players. He\'s meticulous in detail and preparation, an inheritance from his days under Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He and Weis may be the No. 1 candidates among all coordinators.
If we did make a change, this is the guy I like. |

All of these guys sound great. As does just about any coach before he is hired. Which was the reason he got hired in the first place. But, taking a guy with no proven track record at the head coaching level is a bigger risk than hiring someone with a proven winning record as a head coach. It\'s kinda like signing Tebucky Jones. Yeah, he\'s got potential, but can he do it. Give me a known at this point. And if Bill Parcells says Caughlin is the best coach he\'s ever had, then I\'m going to take his word for it. Also, Caughlin going 15-1 in the regualar season a\'int bad. Taking an expansion team to the NFC championship in the second year isn\'t either...........

I just like the fact that the list is LONG, experienced, and talented. Let\'s make the change to someone who will be a true leader and instill some discipline and accountability in this place.... and maybe a guy who would bring in decent coordinators wouldn\'t hurt either.

Ahhh, thanks, although if it weren\'t for the feud between the two, I believe his answer would have been Belichick.

Dennis Green, Sabian or Lovie Smith are tops on my list as Coaches we should go after. There is also Terry Bradshaw and Deon, LOL.
