New Orleans Saints 2011 Linebacking Corps Candidates Analyzed
The position of linebacker for the New Orleans Saints last season was a lot like that of running back for them, where attrition dictated the roster much more than straight-ahead, old-fashioned competition did. The loss of two up and comers, both in their 2nd year at that time, in Stanley Arnoux and Jonathan Casillas, the first of whom would have projected as a solid backup and regular special teams contributor and the second of whom was expected to take over the starting position at weak side linebacker alongside Jonathan Vilma at MLB and Scott Shanle at SLB on the other side, threw a major wrench into the works at the very start of the season last year for sure.

Is Martez Wilson good enough to start right away?

I can see Vilma and Casillas....not sure if Wilson will start his first season. But this article brings up a good point. The battle for the two remaining LB positions is going to be great!

Wilson needs to learn the complex defensive schemes that GW runs first and prove that he can fully handle to position of Sam LB before he actually starts. My hunch is that Scott Shanle will be kept around in NOLA as the starting Sam LB while helping to mentor Martez Wilson as his heir apparent to wind up spelling him before the end of the season.
