Reggie blames Superdome turf for struggles

In a recent ESPN interview, Reggie Bush blamed the turf at the Superdome for his injury struggles with the Saints.

"There's a big difference between playing on turf and playing on grass," Bush said. Since appearing in all 16 contests as a rookie in '06, Bush has missed 20 games due to various injuries, most to his knees and legs. Bush is expected to hit free agency after the Saints release him. It sounds like he may focus on potential suitors that play their home games on grass.

This should be interesting.

SapperSaint 07-12-2011 08:53 AM

excuses excuses excuses. :crying:

I guess if we would only let Reggie play on grass fields he would have been a BEAST!:whatever:

Excuses for poor performance, IMO.... is BS. The new "Turf" while it may not be grass...is nothing like the astro turf of old.

dizzle88 07-12-2011 09:06 AM

More excuses.

I like reggie but this offseason is turning everybody against him, with his tweeting and everything.
He gets injured when he plays on normal turf, see Saints vs Carolina week 7 2008 season, injured just running normally. Stop talking reggie, go out and try and show people what you can do!

Beastmode 07-12-2011 09:07 AM

I agree, though materials have improved, the problem is compression still changes over time, hard spots develop. On the other hand, in cold climates grass can be worse. The most recent study however has found only a marginal increase in injuries as opposed to grass. At the end of the day though, if he believes there is a "big" difference it's not based on any data, just personal preference.

73Saint 07-12-2011 09:09 AM

I am officially throwing my name into the "Reggie will play somewhere else next season" hat.

What a whiner. Check out his splits from the last few years:

Reggie Bush Stats, Splits - New Orleans Saints - ESPN

He's got higher rushing averages on turf.

Reggie needs to suck it. I'm hoping he leaves now, just one stupid comment after another.

Good, ESPN called him out. All he had to say is that he prefers grass and leave it at that. Stating it's a big difference with nothing to back it up is no different than saying, hey, look at me I'm making excuses, hear me roar.

SAINT_MICHAEL 07-12-2011 09:56 AM

Ok, I don't see a link to the direct article, so I don't know what context this interview was in, but if some reporter asked him if running on grass and running on turf was the same and his reply was:

"There's a big difference between playing on turf and playing on grass."

Then what is the big deal? That line is the only thing attributed to him by quotes. Until I know more, I see no reason to slam him for this.

papz 07-12-2011 10:03 AM

That's a good point.

Here's the official interview.

It's a video. He attributes his elevated number of injuries to playing on turf hence, "big difference". No study claims that, the differences are marginal at best. The reality is there is no big difference, he's just making an unsubstantiated claim. How is it a big difference?

Wasnt the MNF game last year against the 49ers on grass when he broke his fibula?

Luda34 07-12-2011 11:11 AM

He do realize he's going to have to play turf again. So when ever he has a bad game he's going to blame it on the turf.

jnormand 07-12-2011 11:51 AM

It's obvious that ESPN is working for the Indy Colts. They are paying the reporters to lure and trap Reggie into making comments that they can throw on the boards in attempt to get him released! Hey check it out...it even says that Reggie is going to test the free agent market "when" he is released.

All joking aside, I try not to listen too much to this stuff. I hope we keep Reggie (at a fair price) and he comes back with avengence in 2011. I'm not going to be too quick to hate on the guy. He's never said anything bad about the coaching, the owners, the fans or his teamates which is what a lot of players in his situation do.

I doubt he'll be in the black and gold this year, but I hope he is. And I truly want him to have a great season.

He never mentionded having more bad games on turf which I assume you mean poor performance. He was relating turf to higher injuries.

If ESPN pointed out those stats after his comments to contradict Reggie they failed because he never made that claim regarding his performance on turf/grass and I didn't realize this fact until I watched the interview.

Look at his eyes and you can see he's genuinely sad of what has transpired this offseason. Whether he's a Saint or not this upcoming season, I really hope he explodes and fulfills his potential... just not against us. Would love to have him back at a reasonable price(wouldn't know what to do with his jersey I have at home), but I just don't see it in his best interest to remain here. He has been a modeled citizen here and helped re-energize the city to a certain extent.

You are exactly right 656, playing on normal grass he broke his fibula. I can't stand excuses, he needs to be quiet and go try and prove what he can do.
Put him on kick returns!

foreverfan 07-12-2011 05:55 PM

This is a ploy to get the Saints to pay him more money.

Ashley 07-12-2011 09:20 PM

At first I was pissed when i saw "reggie blames superdome turf". He didn't say our turf, he just said turf. Plus being in a unfortunate place (kind of thing).
I'm not pissed after watching the video, I hope he stays a saint.
(Still think he will play for another team although)

Rugby Saint II 07-12-2011 10:09 PM

I want him but I don't think we need him.

See? This is the BS that the media does. They take something that someone says and turn it into money and BS. Exactly, he never said, "Yeah! Its that ****in Superdome turf! I hate that ****! THE SUPERDOME TURF is the reason I'm always injured!"

I don't read too much into this. The media is getting bored and needs stories to tell.

Crusader 07-13-2011 01:16 AM

Injury rate on turf is a tricky question and there has not been enough studies performed yet on the subject. A lot of soccer clubs in northern europe wants to switch to turf to have better fields when its cold weather but many remain sceptic since a lot of people feel that turf creates more injuries. UEFA (European governing body for soccer) for example won't let games in the big european cups to be played on artificial turf.

My team switched to turf back in 06 and we have seen an increase in knee injuries since, however its hard to know if the turf i to blame or how well trained the players are, what kinda cleats they wear and so on.

So what I'm saying is I don't know if reggie really is that far off from the truth of it. Think it was a good piece. Interesting to see him comment on "the Tweet" and what he said about it makes sense to me. ANy athlete on a team knows competition for ones spot is part of the game, still you don't need to be all happy about it.

Beastmode 07-13-2011 02:56 AM

So, to sum this all up he stated that turf contributed to his injuries because there is a "big difference" playing on turf as opposed to grass.

He did not however refer to the many studies that show there is only a small difference in favor of grass. He also did not claim turf contributed to poor play.

ESPN then jumped on it and put out stats showing his performance on both surfaces which had nothing to do with the interview. People then assumed he said he played better on grass.

You forgot the part where ESPN said he "said" his injury probs are due to the Superdome turf or at least incinuated so.

ESPN spinning it like a top in a tornado.

You are correct sir!

lynwood 07-13-2011 04:42 PM

ESPN does nothing but start and fuel rumors. The team/management will do what they think is best. If he comes back great!, If he doesn't I'm fine with it. All depends on game plan and personel packages. I only watch ESPN when they are playing a game.

Mardigras9 07-13-2011 05:26 PM

Reggies's hands, or lack there of, have attributed to several of his "turf" injuries. Playing on turf must make the rock more slippery?

QBREES9 07-13-2011 10:41 PM

Play the hand your delt. Dam Reggie.
