Thankfully, mercifully, the NFL lockout is over. Now comes the fallout.

While New Orleans Saints fans giddily celebrated the return of football on Monday, they would be wise to brace themselves for inevitable departures in the days ahead.

A key player or two -- or three -- is sure to leave via free agency in the coming days. It's an inconvenient truth of NFL life. Players come and go, especially good ones on good teams.

We don't yet know what the 2011 Saints are going to look like. The puzzle is still missing half of its pieces. But this year's Saints team is going to look vastly different than the 2010 edition.

great article, duncan. he puts some things in perspective and forces me, as a fan, to see the cold-hard truth. look at all these guys we have to fight or flight for.

the guys wanting the most money: lance moore, jermon bushrod, and roman harper.

the other guys: dave thomas, jon goodwin, heath evans, scott shanle, remi ayodele, anthony hargrove, zach strief, usama young, jeff charleston, and pierson prioleau.

we are 12 million under the cap. its INEVITABLE....MOST of these guys are going to have to peace out.

i pose this question to you, b&g.com, who should we keep, who should we let walk?

Moore, Bushrod, Harper, Charleston, Goodwin, Strief and DThomas. That's about half of these guys. I want Reggie but we can't offer what others will - see ya! The rest need to be on the cheap.

IMO, priority number one should be Lance Moore. Guy is a champ and really makes this offense hum.

Bushels is tricky... I don't think he's the long-term solution at tackle, but he's the best we have right now (from all reports I've seen, Charles Brown is nowhere close to being ready to start). If we could do a two or three year deal, I'd be pleased.

Kind of the same deal with Harper, he looks like he's losing a step but he's the best we've got right now.

Don't really care about Charleston, Strief, or Goodwin. I'd like to see us keep David Thomas considering we have zero TE depth.

I love it when someone else is paying attention. Charleston is always around the ball when he gets in the game. Charleston is versatile, good on ST, seems to keep his feet, and will do fine while Smith is watching from home for the 1st 4 games. He probably won't cost us an arm or leg either.

I wonder whether the fact that there is so little time is going to help us keep important players. Lots of teams are like us and can't even begin looking around until we see who is going to stay.

Key Players to Keep
1. Lance Moore, he has great hands, great motivation, he's a team player. He will do the things that win you championships...
2. Jeff Charleston.. Again another team player. He does whats asked of him and more.. He's always around the football..
3. Well this is combined The Offensive line.. We need to keep it together as much as possible.. We have been able to do this in the past.. Keeping Drew Brees safe and comfortable in the pocket is a must...

Now some to get rid of...

1. Reggie Bush... Just to much money for what he does.. Unless he takes a major pay cut. We must say goodbye thanx for what you have done for New Orleans but need more out of you on the field..
2. Roman Harper... He does some things good but so many times he gets burnt, not just the Seattle game.. But in his past he has blown coverage at the wrong times in games... Put Malcom Jenkins at Safety !!!
3. Devery Henderson... Though I hate to see him go.. He makes so many big plays for the Saints... I feel Lance Moore s a better fit..

Well the main thing is football is back. We can wish all we want. But I must say the coaching staff and GM has done a great job the last few years..
Wasn't long ago all we as fans could hope for is a winning season..
Now we hope for another Super Bowl Trip..
