49ers put Taylor Mays on the trading block!

@AdamSchefterAdam Schefter

49ers sent out a mass email this afternoon to teams around the league to try and trade safety Taylor Mays.

His star has certainly fallen! :(

Mods; sorry I thought this was going to the NFL section. Please move.

Crusader 08-04-2011 03:12 PM

I'd take a loooong hard look at him. To much athletic ability not to. GW could straighten him out.

dizzle88 08-04-2011 03:12 PM

wow, after one season and the 49ers are giving up on him already, there franchise is giving players away!

jcp026 08-04-2011 03:23 PM

Let's do it. This guy has the ability to be a star and could probably be had for very little in return.

strato 08-04-2011 03:26 PM

Harbaugh ..doesn't like USC players.

jcp026 08-04-2011 03:26 PM

He can be Roman Harper with SPEED and a huge upside.

alexonfyre 08-04-2011 03:27 PM

We have two stars at safety already...and is Taylor Mays going to be a back up here or start for a team who will pay him more?

Pete 08-04-2011 03:28 PM

They're abandoning the ship Singletary put a hole in.GW could get the most out of his talents for sure!

Speedy Ron 08-04-2011 03:47 PM

this guy wasnt what he was thought to be. might be worse than harper in coverage. he has straight line speed. he might be good on special teams

I've heard ever since his days at USC that he was terrible in coverage

Lifer 08-04-2011 03:53 PM

49ers cleaning house big time. Mays is a physical specimen not a playmaker. He lacks football instincts and ball skills. He is Tebucky Jones part two. Don't touch him!

Pete 08-04-2011 04:05 PM

I bet they wish their scouts would've caught that. All I remember was the hype surrounding him coming out of the draft.Tell him to suit up next friday in Blackandgold, and we'll give him a trial run against the team trying to trade his azz.4 picks,2 forced fumbles,8 passes deflected, etc.

Just reading that damn name made me curl up in a ball, sucking my thumb.

Don't do that to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

papz 08-04-2011 05:46 PM

If he wanted to come in and compete at linebacker... I'd be willing to give him a shot. Not the least be interested in him at safety.

TheDeuce 08-04-2011 06:17 PM

The fact that he's being shopped already says something. Freak athletes don't always make for freak football players (see Reggie Bush or Walter Thomas).

Maverick2299 08-04-2011 07:24 PM

knowing the eagles right now they will make a swing at him.

Luda34 08-05-2011 06:39 AM

Give them a 5 or 6 round draft pick for him. This guy is a good player

Too late I think. I heard that the Bengles Picked him up yesterday, but I don't know where the guy saw it

Cruize 08-05-2011 07:07 AM

He has to have more talent than the camp bodies the Saints have at backup safety.

you could offer them shanle and brees and they wouldnt take it cause shanle is involved

homerj07 08-08-2011 09:12 PM

Can't really find out much about him- do we really need another CB in the mix? Aren't there other positions we need to bring people for??

alleycat_126 08-08-2011 10:50 PM

The organization didn't want him. He was singletary's pick. Now that that's over he's on his way out as well. Aaron Maybin is getting trade talk as a bust DE too.

Yet Shanle is the one voted MVP of the defense by his teammates.

jeanpierre 08-08-2011 11:37 PM

What's with the Shanle bashing???

He's a solid player; and for those who espouse "GW" as the imperial, all-knowing, unquestionable authority on football, the DC has had nothing but praise for the Shanle...

Roman Harper has been busted in some big games, humiliated on some plays nationally and still everyone wants to eat his korn kernels?!?

But somehow Shanle is awful?!?

It's regretful that Taylor Mays with all that talent can't put it together; reminds me of Renaldo Turnbull...

But we don't need another strong safety who can't cover - that's for sure...

Shanle has been a starter in this league for several years. Its all relative. For what he is Im sure Greg is high on Junior. I have two employees. One is a seasoned career waiter, the other is a 20 year old stoner who has a hard time coming in with his shoes tied much less pronouncing half the items on my menu. I praise the seasoned guy when he sells a $200 bottle of wine. I praise the stoner when he makes it out of the kitchen without dropping a bowl of soup down an old ladies bra. The seasoned guy will take the lead for all the high dollar clients, and the stoner I will probably wind up firing or demoting him to bus boy and keep him on part time so I have someone to fill in when we are really busy and I need an extra hand.

The Stoner just needs guidance...and the other guy a raise..lol..Getting back to Shanle...i hope he does make the probowl...that would just be the end of it all..lol..this board would explode...Junyah...and im being serious...if he gets the mental aspects down could have 6 to 7 sacks...against first stringers..He has the burst and power from what i remember of him last year.....he seemed overwhelmed at times..I think G.W might can coach him up well enough to be a pass rush specialist..He just needs to be a little less aggressive and run by plays...but he definitely can get past people.. and be disruptive..

You can fire the stoner and hire me. I'm a seasoned career waiter and I need a job! :D

Choupique 08-09-2011 06:25 AM

I could never work in food service... well, not for very long.

I'd pour a bowl of soup on a rude patron in a New York second. Book it.

hagan714 08-09-2011 06:52 AM

in a heart beat if the price is right.
FS? no way.
SS u bet!
LB project sure why not he is big enough to come off the edge
go for it!

Euphoria 08-09-2011 07:07 AM

There is no such thing as 'upside'. You either play to your potential or you don't.

DblBogey 08-09-2011 08:09 AM

He's worth a look you can always cut him if it doesn't work out!

Exactly, that's why when we draft guys in Rounds 1-3 and you have to wait till their last year of their rookie contract to start or "rotate" it drives me nutz...

Either you can play or not...

Sure there is. A raw rookie needs time to develop. His measurables may be excellent but his knowledge of the game needs refining. Therefore the term "upside".
