After watching the game twice now... these are some of the positives I got out of it:

  • Pass rush and run D - both looked good to great all through the game.

  • Tom Johnson - I know I've hyped this guy up a lot, but I think he looked the part early on. Unfortunately he hobbled of the field at about 12 minutes left in the 2nd quarter and didn't return. Showed good penetration, quick lateral movement abilities and seems that overall he has a good motor coupled with a tenacious mentality. He did make some wrong reads on a couple of plays, but that's a given at this stage. Hope the injury wasn't serious.

  • Mitch King - Looked good and should provide even more of a "problem" for GW in deciding on the last roster spots on DT. Swanson wasn't too shabby either... It seemed like King also had some kind of a small injury, it appeared that he was having some tightness in the groin area (insert joke here) when he too hobbled of the field.

  • Jonathan Casillas - He looked really good in the 2nd half. Had good penetration, but also had a "cool head" in some plays and let the play develop before committing to a decision. Because of that he also made some good plays chasing down the ball carrier.

  • Johnny Patrick - Before he got hurt and had to leave the field he was really impressive and it's easy to see why the camp reports have been praising his performances... I hope it's nothing too serious 'cos the Saints are already thin at that position.

  • Korey Hall - Had some really nice blocking plays that really stood out to me. Based on just that small sample he is a clear upgrade from Evans in that regard.

  • Joseph Morgan - Probably don't need to state anything that isn't already clear to anyone who watched the game. I hope we'll see how Fayson stacks up in the following games, and with Roby performing well also, there are some difficult decisions to be made regarding that 5th receiver position.

I was quite surprised and impressed at how good Roby looked at WR. If he's going to make the team this year, being that now he's not our number 1 guy returning kicks anymore, he really needs to impress outside.

Me too... on a couple of plays where he wasn't the targeted one - I rewound the game a couple of times and focused on watching him, and he
was running some crisp routes. I was glad to see that 'cos he has always seemed to me to be a more of a speedster than anything else!

its going to be a tight race between Roby and Morgan, unless the saints keep six WR.
