While the affirmative case for offseason training activities was made by the New Oleans Saints' and San Fransico 49s' first-team offenses that slopped around for a few series in the first quarter Friday night, backup quarterback Chase Daniel solidified his case as Drew Brees' understudy at the Superdome.
It wasnt all that spectacular . But it didn't have to be, either.
Daniel directed a couple of scoring drives in the first half -- one ending on Garrett Hartley's 47-yard field goal in the first quarter, the other culminating with Mark Ingram's 14-yard touchdown run in the second -- to lead New Orleans to a 17-3 lead at the break.
And he was the quarterback of record for the offense's last scoring drive, a 38-yard march that ended on a 4-yard run by Chris Taylor to prove the final margin 24 to 3, with 8:33 left.
Couple in the fact that San Francisco was nothing short of wretched in the exhibition season opener for both teams -- the Saints' defense rolled up six sacks in the first half, rag-dolling Niners quarterbacks Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick at will -- and Daniel didn't exactly have to be a replica of Brees.

Chase Daniel is a good player

He shows a fire and competitiveness to win, he has also shown that he wants to learn from Drew and he's picked up the things that he has been taught.

The guy played well for us last preseason aswell, a couple more years under his belt and by the time Drew hangs up the cleats we may have our Starting QB already here.

I just wish Booby Hebert would quit calling him Chase Daniels.

I'm quite OK with the backup QB's we have.

I too am comfortable with what we have for our QBs - OR we could always bring back Bret Favre

I think we can win with him if the unspeakable happens.

If our defense plays like they did the other night, we could win with Danno back there.

Which reminds me of a question I have. Have they already or will they someday have an "AB appreciation day"? We did get our 1st playoff win with him back there.

I agree, I vote Danno for 3rd string QB.

Jeff Blake got us to the playoffs, AB just won that one game, then ruined our whole team.

-1 Rep for the suggestion of AB Appreciation Day. That is just DISGUSTING.
