Bradley Handwerger / WWLTV.com Sports Reporter

METAIRIE, La. – By Jed Collins’ count, he has been shown the door 12 times the past four years at NFL facilities.

Now he’s hoping the 13th window opened, which is with the Saints, will be his final stop.

But Collins plays the one position that continues its descent to being out of vogue – NFL fullback – and he realizes that his journey might not be finished.

“There’s only one spot on every team,” Collins said. “If you’re not that guy, you’re searching for a window or something to be open because the door shuts real quickly. I’ve had a lot of teammates, a lot of coaches tell me I could play in this league.

“It’s just taken some self-discipline and just trying to get confidence back in myself to keep on keeping on and keep on trying and keep on striving for the ultimate dream of making a team.”

This guy impressed me in Houston, but there is only room for one FB on the roster. Hall?

He ought to say he's is FB and attempt at FG kicker he'd have a better chance since we've carried 2 of them before, lol.

Thanks papz -I love these type of stories & always wish them luck.

I guess I am a sucker for the hard luck story -the Saints are full of them

he looked good against the Texans but Hall will be tough competition. I could even see us go with no FB at all.

I dunno, I think a good FB keeps running backs healthy and makes them more effective, particularly guys like Ingram. Another thing is that, because the FB is so rarely used in the league nowadays, Payton could cue up some pretty crazy old school stuff that DCs haven't planned or trained for in 10 years. We used Heath Evans pretty well in that regard for the last two seasons, regardless of what you think about him, I believe FB has an important role on our team.

As for Collins, he has his work cut out for him to beat Hall, but its hard not to root for the guy.

I agree with you Alex that a FB is a good thing, just that I wouldn't be surprised if Payton was happy enough with Thomas versatility and chose to sign an extra WR instead for example.

That's a fair point, Lorenzen looks like he could also fill that role, if needed.

Poor ol Jed, barely keepin his family fed, when someone said he ought to move away from there, said New Orleans is the place you want to be, so he loaded up his truck and moved to Metairie, Louisiana that is. Seafood, Mardi Gras. Then one day when he was shootin at some food, up through the ground came a black and gold crude.Well first thing ya know ol Jed's a millionaire, he made the Saints team which is something very rare and now life seems a lot more fair.

Terrible, I know but had to get that out LOL
