Sloppy tackles

When we had all of our corners going down we brought in FA's off the street. One we brought back was Mike McKinzie who was a good player that loved to launch himself at players. It produced some hard hits but also some bounces off the ball carrier who just keep running. No one can run with their knees bound together. I truly believe MM's tackling rubbed off on that years team and still hasn't been exorcised.

First guy to touch needs to wrap up. Let the next guy coming in go for the ball. Make the tackle needs to be first on the agenda.

Nah -- that's not the way we play Saints football...First guy needs to fall down 5 yards away from the play, harmlessly. Second guy needs to be circling his hands around the legs of the runner and end up grabbing air...third guy needs to collide with the fourth guy, and the two of them crumble to the ground in a heap...5th guy needs to grab up high with his hands and then fall away...6th guy needs to jump on the back of the runner, be dragged a few yards, and then fall off harmlessly....the 7th guy, I dunno what the 7th guy is trying to do, maybe he tries to strip the ball, ends up playing pattycake with the runner, then he trips over the 6th guy ...the 8th, 9th and 10th guys have a bad angle and aren't anywhere near the runner...and then at the very end of the play we see Roman Harper running across the field, way behind and off in the distance. THAT FOLKS, IS THE GREGG WILLIAMS D!!!

I ahve said for years that tackling is a dying art. They hit & don't wrap. Sure as hell not what I was taught.

We've had our hiccups, but our D is the best it's been since the early 90's. I'm not complaining about Gregg Williams and his aggressive style one bit. As said, we live by the sword and we die by it. We've gone 24-8 the last 2 years with a bowl win. No complaints here.

Yeah, I know, I know. My post should have been written in a big honking [/sarcasm font]. But some of us are still a little shell shocked and traumatized by the Marshawn Lynch run. When it comes to sloppy basic tackling, I could use a little more of "living to fight another day," and a little less of the dramatic dying by the sword, by skewering ourselves on it needlessly with bad fundamental tackling.

I am so over that Lynch thing. It's amazing we even got to the post season at all last year. Injured quarterback, sorry special teams, no running game all equals a worn out defense and a team sitting home watching the playoffs on the telly. It's a real credit to those boys that they made it as far as they did. Don't despair, our boys'll be doin' some heavy duty crotch punchin' once the real season starts.
