I just decided to not smoke anymore and didn't after that. I know it sounds too easy, but that's how I did it anyway. And mind you, I was smoking about 2 packs a day when I quit. I smoked since I was around 13-14, so I did smoke for around 10 years before quitting. I think cold turkey is the way to go, at least it was for me. I did have an unopened pack of smokes with me all the time for maybe the first 2 months, so that there would not be any excuses to make to myself if I wanted to smoke. My employer at the time provided me with the nicotine gum and patches, but I never opened their packages either. I do think my coffee consumption rose to compensate for the nicotine, but that was a lesser evil for sure. I remember being "on the edge" for maybe the first couple of weeks... and my girlfriend remembers it having been much worse than that, but gradually the graving went away. Drinking and going to bars was always the hardest thing, but in the end it was only mental. Nowadays I can't understand why I smoked in the first place, and couldn't imagine myself lighting one up for any reason. I think it's different from individual to another, because some people don't become addicted to nicotine as much as others. To me, I think it was more of a habit than really an addiction, and I was lucky in that regard. It was the first and only time I decided to quit, so I didn't experience the limbo between quitting and relapsing like many do. |
