Source says Saints and Drew Brees have a "huge gap" to close in contract talks
1 Attachment(s)
No more than a few days ago, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees said his agent the team are in talks for a new contract. Brees is entering the final season of a six-year deal he signed when he arrived in New Orleans in 2006. Seems these talks could take a while though as a source states that a "huge gap" exists between the player and the team. When looking at this "huge gap" between what Brees wants and what the team is willing to pay though; that doesn't mean things have taken a turn for the worst. Merely looking at some of the things that have gone on in the past year will show that if a team wants to keep a player bad enough, things can be worked out.
And the Saints want to keep Drew Brees. read the rest Source says Saints and Drew Brees have a "huge gap" to close in contract talks - New Orleans New Orleans Saints | Examiner.com |
Not even worried about this. His contract will be the new "Louisiana Purchase".

The Louisian Purchase costs $219 million in 2010 dollars, so Benson just may be getting a deal. :bng: |
The thing that bothers me about this is the principle. Maybe a little corny, but I've read it hear before as well. Drew is the face of this franchise, and he has represented it better than anyone in the history of this team.
Give him a frikken blank check and let him fill it out, dammit!! |
and BTW, foreverfan, now I understand why someone would want to be a ball boy!
|
Give the man what he wants!! If he ask for 100 million you give him 200. If he asks for the shirt off of your back you give him the pants as well. Name the city and state Drew Orleans Breesiana!!! Pay the man!!! Pay the Man!!! But seriously he deserves every dollar of what we give him and so much more.

OMG there will be 10.000 posts like these until we get a deal done.
The bottom line is we will get a deal done. I'm officially boycotting all Brees contract posts until we sign him. Anyone with me? |
I want to just see this DONE.
|
Drew will get his money...i guarantee it!
|
Money sure complicates things, now don't it!

It is a likely to happen as foreverfan having a HOT avatar.
I just hope it is not a distraction for the season, because it WILL get done at some point... |
Yes he will get is money - BUT no one deserves this type of money.
Not even Drew (especially not Vick) |

Danny brings some good stuff here...if folks don't like it they can as stated move on..real simple.

Uhhh, because its a forum and he has an opinion on it? |
But to boycott?....that's a little immature...sometimes its better to not comment ...no?
|

But if we can't post opinions to the contrary please advise everyone. Why do you care if a whopping two of us boycott Brees contract posts? Are we required to comment? |
No your not required dude that's the point..this is the first one that i know of that says the two side are apart....but i don't go to other boards so that might be the problem..i dunno
|
Don't get me wrong. I like Danny's stuff. He's one of my favorites. But the Brees contact stuff will probably go back and forth most of the season.
The end result is all I care about. The back and forth is annoying to me. |
I hope not..
But no need to dog his thread..just let it go.. Lets pay the man and be done.. |
I'd say 5-6 yrs. $120mil
|
I just say be resonable. Don't try to one up the last guy in paycheck. That's how we got into the rookie pay mess. Let Philly and Indy burn all that cash on their QB's. Drew deserves a nice paycheck but to give him a blank check and hurt the potential of having money left to sign key players is like trading away your entire draft for one player.
Drew is the francise but you need a team around him for success. Does he need to be the highest paid player on the team..yes. Highest in the NFL....not really. |

We should not only be paying Brees whatever he wants we should be Building a Large Statue of him somewhere by the Mississippi River.
No other QB, wait scratch that, No other PERSON (period) has done so much for the entire state of Louisiana, He's not only given us what generations of Saints fans ever wanted he has also given generations after a gift that will continue to give with the Brees Foundation, We have something special that is a rarity in the NFL, you do not let something like that go or even worry about stuff like money, he seems as focused as ever and as potent as he's been since we stole him away with broken arm coming to a broken city, he's literally embodied what the city of New Orleans had to go through and it's recovery and resurgence back, we have a sweet connection with #9.. Im on #TEAMBREES side.. I think Brees value is much more than Vick's or Payton Manning. Pay him and name a street after him! |

Learned that lesson the hard way? :broccoli: |
I love Drew. Great player. Great guy. But, look at the Colts. They pay Payton $23 mil, who like Drew and Brady deserves it as much as anyone, and then they have to fill out the roster with some very average talent. If Payton doesn't play, they realistically might win 4 games this season. If Brees gets $23 mil, guys like Strief, Henderson, Rodgers, Franklin, Porter, and possibly W. Smith will not be Saints next year. They simply can't pay everybody. As much of a blessing Brees is to the Saints and New Orleans, paying him that much does have a downside. That being said, the deal will get done and it should. LOL.

I thought Canfield was ready to step up by what I saw from him versus the Titans... would save a lot of money. http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit...d-idea-014.gif

I don't think this will be a distraction for one of two reasons. One-Drew signs a reasonable deal soon. Two-Drew down plays it. He is smart enough to understand the economics.

Yeah, these negotiations always get blown out of proportion. Most of the time the player isn't even involved. They discuss what they want their salary and benefits to be and then the agent adds 25-50% and goes from there. The FO says how much they aim to spend and the negotiators cut by 25% and go from there. In this case, because Drew is such a bigger deal than any other Saint before him, and Benson is such a notorious cheapass, naturally that separation is going to be much larger. It isn't going to take them too long to cut through all of the bullcrap and give him about as much as the Mannings are making.
