Sean Payton and short yardage plays

I've been thinking this a while. Sean Payton may be the best play caller in the league, but he has a problem calling short yardage plays properly. I think it has something to do with how his mind works. He's so expansive with how he sets up his plays that when it's like 4th and 1 he's baffled with how to just pick up one yard. The funny thing is that our conversion percentage would probably be higher if we treated 4th down as if it was 2nd down. The plays become ultra-conservative and highly predictable.

Absolutely correct. He gets the anti-virus.

I'll say this, after watching the First & Goal @ the GB 1 (Last Play), I wouldn't have Carl Nicks pulling and trapping; I'd have our guards and center blasting straight ahead...

Just take a look at GB and Kuhn. We need to get the FB involved in the run game. Getting the QB, FB and even the WR's on reverses into the running game keeps these 3-4 LB's from totally reading the play and teeing off on our tailbacks.

On 4th and inches, we need to get a clue and do the sane thing - get up to the line quick and QB sneak. I bet the chances of getting the first on a QB sneak are well above 90%. Every sane team at high school level and above considers this, but instead we futz around and call a time-out and then pass the ball or call some other scatter-brained play after giving their D time to settle in. Fix this one little problem and we likely win last night's game and maybe 1-2 more from last year. Aargh!!!

i have to agree, we like never do anything else on 3rd or 4 and a foot. its off right guard or tackle. we should have blasted behind the all pro center.

I'm under the notion that on 4th and short you always want the play dictated by your best players like when Ricky Williams ran behind Roaf.
Our strength first and foremost is Brees and our receivers. Put it in their hands.

It's not the call, it's the execution (or lack thereof)

Playaction or a bootleg would have got that td...GB was playing run all the way...

Although I thought he should've called something different, just like Ingram said you have to get that yard and if you don't trust your guys to do it might as well not be coaching or get some new guys.
