I have watched the Saints attempt to impose their will on other teams with very little success in short yardage run situations. I think maybe they should try what I have been suggesting since the days of Duece: spread the field on 3rd and short.
As strong as Duece was, even he had troubles when there were no gaps to wedge through. There is no way you can convince me that it is easier to get 1 or 2 yards with 8 in the box rather than 5. We put about 1500 lbs of beef on the line, defenses match our effort, and that adds up to over a ton of meat on the stack. No wonder our backs end up in no man's land. Pile so high they can't get over it, stacked so thick they can't get under it. They can't even get momentum or even see a gap to put their head down and drive for 2 yards.
Spread the field and thin that thing out. We've all seen how hard PT, Ingram, Sproles, & Ivory run the ball. Every one of them can hit a gap and get 2 or 3 if a gap exists. Hand/arm tackles are useless on any of them. Moreover, it gives Brees options...we are talking Brees...may catch some guy napping.
We are doing our guys a dis-service by putting them in position to fail. Our O-line is just average. We are asking too much when we want them to move that much meat on a dare. I hope Payton stops, just stops. Spread the field Mr. Playcalling Genius. If we run the ball our chances of success go up. If Brees dials up a hot route, those pecentages are always high side. Forget trying to prove a point, SPREAD THE FIELD on 3rd and short! and let's imporve that stat and and take advantage of the added conversions and extra possesions.
