Never wanted Culpepper, sorry. Felt Drew was too young for the injury to hault his career, and he had way too much success at San Diego to pass over.

I was always of the mind that Culpepper's days were best left in Minny. He was a benefactor of all the talent available to him on that loaded offense back in those days.
There are certain vibes about players I get when I know they will just light it up with particular teams. I had it immediately with Drew. I never thought he would challenge Marino for passing records but I knew he would be of great value. Daunte was a good QB but I don't think he ever commanded true leadership qualities that head coaches and OCs would just hand the keys over to him the way QBs such as Brees and Peyton do. |
I was all for an injured Brees over Culpepper. I was concerned with his injury but I wanted Brees for his mind over Culpepper's physical abilities. Culpepper seemed like a bigger Aaron Brooks to me.

Worse... I wanted Matt Leinhart.... thats why I pay $180 per game and drink beer

Did not want Culpepper. I mainly just wanted Aaron Brooks gone.

No. I remember it was just the talking heads calling Drew's injury career threatening. All the former players (including Archie) and medical folks like the surgeon to the stars Dr. Andrews (Even though he has since changed his story recently for more TV time) all said the injury was not career threatening.
I definitely wanted Brees the second I heard we had a shot at getting him. I had been paying a lot of attention to the Chargers at that point, mainly because of L.T. He was great fun to watch in his prime. I knew damn well Drew was a super high quality QB. I did think Culpepper could be a good QB, but it was way too soon after his injury for him to be playing. He SHREDDED that knee. He tore the ACL, the MCL, AND the PCL. He should NOT have been on a football field at ALL that season. Now, before the Drew option came up, the two QBs I was interested in were Kyle Boller and Jon Kitna. After a few rough years, it really looked like Boller finally got it! He was playing his ass off at the end of the '05 season. Then they replaced him with McNair. And Kitna I always felt was a good QB, stuck on a lousy Bengals team. I figured he could be the game manager that we needed in New Orleans. With Deuce and Horn and Pathon we had a good enough offense to win games as long as we had a QB who could actually read a defense and not throw the f'n ball backwards or drop it for no good reason. |
i wanted to keep A.B. maybe not
but i never liked cullpepper |
I was working about 70 hours a week, (thats my excuse, and I'm sticking
to it.) and actually missed out on a lot at that time, so I didnt know much about Drew, and didnt imagine he would be anything special, afterall we were getting him. I thought that probably he, and Payton were just cheap to get, or something. I wanted Matt Leinart. Sad, but true. Wow, was I wrong. |
