NEW ORLEANS – For much of the past five-plus seasons, Sean Payton and his Saints have espoused time and again the “next man up” mantra.

For injuries at receiver.

For injuries along the offensive line.

For injuries to cornerbacks and safeties.

Sunday night, those in the Superdome witnessed maybe the most-impressive if not ultimate next man up scenario.

While we chased answers for how the New Orleans Saints were going to deal with play-calling with Payton moving to the upstairs booth, those putting the game plan together at the Airline Drive facility in Metairie, La., knew something they weren’t going to let on until after the fact.

Payton was going to spend his time eating hot dogs in the coaches’ booth.

Pete Carmichael Jr. was going to spend his time calling plays.

In the Saints’ 62-7 demolition of Indianapolis, you’d be hard-pressed to know just who was calling the plays.

A couple more good/great performances like this and Carmichael could find himself on a few teams short list for Head Coaching vacancies next season.
