(let the disagreemants fly....!)
Then again, Brady has thrown 10 picks this year, so I wouldn't use him as a comparison. Peyton Manning threw tons of picks in 2009 (16) and 2010 (17) and he's getting top money. Maybe a better question to ask is what does a quarterback mean to his team and could his team possibly live without him. Maybe we could live without him and maybe we couldn't but I'm not really interested in finding out!

He absolutely deserves the big money because of what he's done for the team and the city. And though it matters very little in the grand scheme of things, Brees should have been the league MVP in 2009. I was pretty disappointed with him not getting it.

Besides if he helped us finish the season this year like we did in '09, I don't think there would be much argument for him for MVP. I mean who else is out there showing it right now... No one really, especially since Manning is out.
Rodgers is playing better than anyone by far.

I don't think you give someone a new contract for what they've done, you give them a new contract based on what they can do for you over the life of the new contract.

With that being said, he's gonna get a huge raise.

What a person has done shows what he's capable of and is the indicator of how they will perform in the future. We all see that Brees is one of the best players in the league and deserves the loot.

I understand that a player gets paid based on what he will bring to the team in the next few years but I would guess that his influence on the region since his arrival would affect his pay. At least Tom Condon hopes so.

Thats my point. You contract him on future contributions, not past contributions under a previous contract.

But obviously past performance is a huge factor in determining what those future contibutions are.

I generally agree, however if what they've done for you is over and above, then maybe you bend the rules? I don't know...

But you're right. He's gonna get a big raise regardless.

I definitely recall 4 picks that hit receivers hands, and there may be more. It kind of scews the numbers. I wish receivers could get credited for picks in those cases. As many passes as Brees is throwing, there are bound to be a few off the mark, especially with the protection troubles this season. The number of decisions also go up, good and bad, and he's thrown a few that he should have been thown into the 10 row. Drew is one of the best. He has been healthy, real or perceived, for his entire Saint tenure. I would hate to have the weight of all that new money crank up the jinx machine.
