What to make of Saints Defense?

I read a lot of post about who should do a better job, how the offense is carrying the defense, etc. I seem to think the defense is playing within the scope of the coaching. It is sort of the bait and switch. They play very far off the receivers. Tackling is always at the ball. With that said, you get some and you miss some. This year they haven't been as lucky to get the turnovers. I think they will come. All in all they are playing as per the dictation of the game and the coaching. It's a gambling defense that can be a bit frustrating to watch when the ball isn't bouncing the Saints way. But it is a fun thing to watch also when they start getting the turn overs. Overall I'm happy with our record and I think the defense is part of that. So I still think they are doing great!

It's the Saints roller coaster of excitement!! Frustrated with the extra yards! Dancing in the front yard when they finally get one!

As you pointed out, its kinda hit and miss with our defense.

I was so excited/suprised when i saw Will herring get that pick, but then you have plays like the quick pass to the WR and patrick robinson did not attack the ball carrier on two seperate occasions, not to mention that he is most likely the worst culprit for playing too far off the receivers, he's the one that always gets beat on the slants.

I'm very happy with our record, getting vilma back should be a boost but i have been really impressed with Dunbar its not easy to do what he's done the past 4 weeks when your a backup.

Its true we need more of a pass rush without sending 6 or 7 players at a time and you know how that happens?

You bump the receivers at the line to slow them down, you play man coverage and you send 4 lineman, the slower the WR's get off the line the easier it will be for our lineman to get a sack, playing 7-10 yards off a receiver is asking to get beat to be fair

I see your point but the defense most often times has the luxury of playing with a lead. Teams "QB's" have a tendency to be more aggressive. So for me "the optimist", It's again the bait and switch. Give them more than what is really there. Over the course of the year we have had alot of opportunities to make the interceptions but we have not caught the ball. So that maybe the skill set we are missing to make the defense seem better.

Yeah very true that our defense has been playing with the lead most of the year, and your right that we have dropped a couple interception opportunities. Tracy dropped one that fell into his hands the other night lol

Quite abit of it i think is a swagger missing from our Defense, I think Malcolm Jenkins is a great player but he needs to get better on reading the QB and making a interception - Much like Darren Sharper would (Strato thats your cue.....)

Overall i'm happy though, we are leading the NFC south, lets see if the niners drop a couple and we can even get a first round bye

Vilma has been battling through the pain, but it really showed up in his last outting and they sat him.
Dunbar has done excellent filling in for Vilma even early in the season.
Our trouble has been with the front 7, and more specifically with the front 4.
Those 4 cause the extra burden to be placed on the middle 3 and then their overflow to the DB's.
No run stop prowess and no pass rush either. That makes it hard on everybody.
I've seen improvement, so I am hopeful.
If we ever get more than 1 guy to have a decent outting, we're going to reak havoc.
Its either Smith or Jordan, never both on the same day. Turk did OK but he's been hurt.
I just won't mention the interior. NONE of them has had a good day yet. Its week 13.
Maybe Williams is trying not to show his hand.

Defense is the achilles heal this year, like the running game was last year. The team just has to win in spite of it. I still don't understand why Robinson plays 15 yards off the reciever on third and short?
