The Saints can clinch the NFC's No. 2 seed and a bye with a win and a loss by the San Francisco 49ers. The Patriots will be the No. 1 seed in the AFC unless they lose to the Bills.
Payton told reporters Tuesday he will look closely at how much his starters need to play against the Carolina Panthers at 1 p.m. ET. The 49ers (12-3) play at the same time in St. Louis (2-13), needing a win to clinch the second seed. Adding intrigue to the record chasing is the fact the Patriots also face the Buffalo Bills at exactly the same time, creating a scenario that gives Brady a chance to overtake the lead if Brees isn't on the field. ( Brees deserves to set the record, not just break it. It will be a shame if Brady surpasses him. )

If you were like an NFL marketing person you could not INVENT a more exciting last weekend of the season, the divisional matchups, the different people chasing the Brees record, the various win-or-go-home games around the league. Ah the intrigue!

I have to disagree. You play to win games with the ultimate goal of making it to the Super Bowl, not for personal records. It would be selfish and irresponsible to jeopardize the health of the team as a whole just for one person to hold a record. Im not saying we should rest, I think we should play lights out until the half and see whats going on with SF and if that game is out of hand then you rest.
