Saints are a beast in the second half
Just compiled some stats about the Saints awesomeness and here's what I found out.
In the 16 regular season games and 1 postseason game thus far, the Saints have outscored their opponent by a combined 314-170 in the second half. 13 out of 17 times we outscored the opposition in the second half. So how about the other 4 times we didn't? We still won all four of those too (Panthers squeaker, Bucs win, Falcons OT win, Lions reg season). The only way to beat the Saints is to get up on us big in the first half (by 10+ points like Packers, Bucs and Rams did). And even if you do, the game will go down to the wire anyway. If the Saints are ahead or within close striking distance at the beginning of the third quarter, we will take care of buisness. I love it! |

You are exactly right. The only way to really beat the Saints is to have an EXPLOSION of scoring, where you somehow manage to get 17-21 points in a single quarter, in one of the two quarters in the first half. This is the one thing that all three losses this year have in common. And we do it to other people, sometimes, when we win games.
I was looking over some box scores, and it occurred to me, there has to be some kind of stat about that -- where if if you get 17 or 21 points in one single quarter, a team who does that, probably wins that game X percent amount of time. I'm sure it's really high. Even if the other team comes back, which the Saints very nearly did against both the Packers and Rams, 21 points in a single quarter is still too much to overcome. |
