This is an object lesson in paying too much to a few players

This is an open post to Drew Brees, or anyone who advises him.

If you want to lose. If you want to continue to fall short. If you want to be, for the end of your career a statistical anomaly.

GO FOR THE BIG MONEY.

You've already made $60 million on this contract. You've made more on non-football related marketing and merchandising. I'm certain that, barring fantastic poor judgment, you've made sure that your great-grandchildren will have no financial worries.

It is painfully obvious that you can accomplish a lot on your own. No one would begrudge you going for the big payout.

However, if you really want to win. If you value legacy as much as you value that marginal dollar. If you have any pride whatsoever.

GIVE THE SAINTS ORGANISATION CAP ROOM TO SIGN QUALITY PLAYERS.

It is glaringly obvious that we have huge weaknesses all over the team. Cap space is at a premium. We have to fill those gaps while your athletic ability window is still open.

No, I am not remotely suggesting that you play for free. However, $13 million for 5 years vs 20 million for 5 years means that you lose at least 1 key weapon and 2 linemen, plus diminishing the ability to upgrade elsewhere.

If you flew back to NO this evening pondering the future, I hope you know that yours is the domino that either falls in the direction of improvement, or disaster.

You may earn the money, but we as fans pay. We want a winner. We want satisfaction.

We retched watching this abortion today. Don't give us more.

I'll play for 3 mill. Might not break any records or win a game but for that amount just call my agent, her name is wife.

I understand your logic on this one. It's the "Jordan Rules". Michael Jordan took a cut in salary to keep the likes of Pippen & Rodman. They won 6 championships. On the other hand......there are several guys on this defense that just aren't worth the money we're paying them......Will Smith, Sedrick Ellis, Malcolm Jenkins, Patrick Robinson......just to name a few. If you want to make salary cap cuts, get rid of these overpaid "veterans" and draft some talent that you don't have to pay much under the new agreement. Brees gets paid.....period. We are a 2-14 team without him. That's bottom line.

I do believe that the Saints are not getting their money's worth from the Defense. A quick check of the players' salaries makes this kinda obvious.

I agree with you, Xan.

Drew is one of the biggest reasons I became a Saints fan. I hope he does what is right for the team and vice versa...

I don't know what the 49ers did...but they made Brees look almost human. I wonder if the Brees we saw last night was the same Brees that San Diego let walk. If you don't protect that guy he is not that great. Good...yes, just not great, as 2 picks would indicate. Of course, neither is any other NFL QB.

I, as most around here know, have been reserving my judgement about Brees and Payton (character wise, that is) for quite some time now. I think this off-season I will finally get some answers about both.

Whether you think you can or think you can't...you're right!

1. Brees pay has nothing to do with other players not playing up to their pay. Drew could take $2 a year, but if our defense does not play well, they just do not play well.
2. Brees looking human has nothing to do with receivers not getting open or dropping balls.
3..... Considering he is not in the top 10 highest paid QB's he deserves to get paid! If he were the highst paid QB I "may agree"

Brees will do what it takes to be fair to himself, and put a winner on the field. Think Mike Vick's deal not payton manning's. What the organiztion does with that money is another thing coming. Roders must go, waste of money in mind all year long. Will Smith's deal must be restructured, I 'll give Brees the lions share of the money, Nicks gets the rest, Franchise Colston to keep him here and give every last available dollar to making our Dfense better while we still have time!!!!

They were able to pressure him up the middle with 4 rushers. Teams that can do that - and this season they were the only ones that could - can throw him off his game. This is why we have invested so much on the left and right guards. Bushrod doesn't suck, be clearly he was a liability yesterday. Still, it takes the best of the best to make him look that bad.
