Saints New D Coordinator Search [MEGA-MERGE]

I personally would love to have "Chucky" John Gruden but I think he will stay with ESPN. What are your thoughts?

Danno 01-16-2012 04:20 PM

Chuck's background is offense, not defense.

B_Dub_Saint 01-16-2012 04:22 PM

I know but I just like the guy. Wade Philips turned out to be a damn good D coordinator. We need to find someone who knows what the hell they are doing.

JoanieNTX 01-16-2012 04:27 PM

I like Chuckie, too. But I heard he signed a 5 year contract with the networks to commentate. :( I think Del Rio would be pretty good.

Danno 01-16-2012 04:28 PM

Maybe he could be our snarl coach.

The Dude 01-16-2012 04:37 PM

Spags.

CharityMike 01-16-2012 04:43 PM

Seems like the no brainer but Del Rio already has a home in the warehouse district and his daughter goes to school at LSU. I think it's going to be Del Rio .

LBCutta 01-16-2012 04:44 PM

I like Spags but Im afraid he will bring that same blitz heavy crap that G.Williams did. Mike Nolan has an eye for talent...and Del Rio is just a good all around DC....at any rate all would be an upgrade.

jnormand 01-16-2012 04:46 PM

I'm going for Del Rio or Spags. I'll trust what SP does.

lumm0x 01-16-2012 04:54 PM

Del Rio. Local history and a good guy.

iceshack149 01-16-2012 05:11 PM

I'm just glad that the Saints have been a winning program for the past five years. The Saints FO appears to be smart and professional and will have a great chance of bringing in a good DC because of it.

That said, I want Del Rio but Nolan and Spagnoulo would be great as well.

jcp026 01-16-2012 05:14 PM

And Gruden would come in and do what? Unless Carmichael leaves, we just don't have room for him. We need the best defensive coaches and talent that we can afford.

Spags. His defense better fits our resources.

saints1234 01-16-2012 06:13 PM

I want Spags hes would better improve our D-line a ton and thats the help we need, our D-line getting more pressure so we dont have to blitz so much

halloween 65 01-16-2012 06:30 PM

Sprags is my 1st pick. Torn between Del Rio and Nolan both are really great DC's. I wouldn't mind any of them as long as they make us good, and I think any of them will.

dizzle88 01-16-2012 07:09 PM

I will be happy if we get either spags, del rio or nolan but my first pick would be spags.

The one thing i like now that williams is gone is that we won't try to overcomplicate our D to try and force big plays;

how many times did we see this year where 3 players thought the play was man coverage and 1 thought it was zone and a receiver is running wide open, players got confused with everything GW changed all the time.

I'd been crying out for man coverage with two deep safeties all this year and spags is really good for getting the most of out the front 4, which in turn will help our DB's

TheEnigma 01-16-2012 07:12 PM

Mike Nolan

RaginCajun83 01-16-2012 07:33 PM

I'd love to land Del Rio, I'm for anyone that lights a fire under the dline so the Saints can get some pressure minus the blitz like the Giants and 49ers

buckblaster1 01-16-2012 07:38 PM

yeah ive been hearing del rio's name alot today lot of peeps think its already kind of done deal. but they will still bring in a few guys to interveiw, spags and nolan probably

Rugby Saint II 01-16-2012 08:40 PM

I don't have a preference. Although I like Del Rio I don't know if he's all that. I don't want to lose our 4-3 front......I'm comfortable with it. Yeah, I know we mixed it up with the 3-4.

W. Kovacs 01-16-2012 09:04 PM

I'm afraid I don't know much about individual DCs so I'll just say this:

I want someone who will get our guys to HIT and jam guys off the line. Watching Mike and Mike on ESPN2 this morning seeing Davis just fly off the line, then blow through tackles made me sick. I know it was just highlights that were being shown over and over and it didn't actually happen THAT much but when it did, it really cost us.

Also, no Wade Phillips: I don't want that dang Flutie Curse anywhere near our team. :)

westbankdaze 01-16-2012 09:36 PM

I like spags because I like his personality. Del rio just doesn't do it for me. Too serious. I think spags and Payton could have a good chemistry but I don't feel the same with del rio and Payton.

I kind of agree. Del Rio has an ego and we don't want anyone to overshadow SP. That's why Gregg Williams was SO GOOD, he knew he was a DC.

We really need somebody who wants to be a DC.

That's exactly what we need! Someone who takes his defense & improving his defense SERIOUSLY!

I think Gruden will stay put with his new contract that I heard is about 4.5 mil per year

QBREES9 01-17-2012 12:27 AM

I'm going for Del Rio or Spags.

pherein 01-17-2012 01:45 AM

Im over names

Chuck Pagano -Ravens
Dick Jauron - Browns
Mel Tucker - Seahawks

Look at the top defenses in the NFL

We don't need cute names. We need a real defense. Rio or Spags, are just names. They haven't been DC's for years now. Who is producing now, not who was great in 1995.

We have a consistent top #10 defense, we can beat anyone. People get so goofy with the names after all who was SP before he created the best offense sense 2006.

SaintsRule11 01-17-2012 02:00 AM

I wish we could get Wade Phillips but I don't think he can be ripped away from Houston. I wouldn't mind Del Rio. Or Spags.

UK_WhoDat 01-17-2012 05:59 AM

Defensive Coordinator – Chuck Pagano

sorted.

UK_WhoDat 01-17-2012 06:04 AM

.... and I want to know who we have as the ongoing Secondary coach too.

Del Rio began his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints in 1997 as the Strength and Conditioning coach. In 1999, he accepted a position with the Baltimore Ravens as their linebackers coach. He is in part credited for the success of the Ravens' defense, particularly the 2000 Ravens' defense. After the 2001 season, he was named defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. In his first season as defensive coordinator, he led them to the second best defense in the league that season.

Fact is Del Rio has relatively recent success as a DC, 2001 really isn't that far off, and it kind of reminds me of what Wade Phillips was able to do ala Houston.

There's no way Pagano leaves the Ravens and if we are just throwing names around I might as well say that the Saints should sign Dick LeBeau.

Out of the realistic targets I like Spags, because he was the one who pretty much made the Giants' defensive front into the beast it is today - I would sure like to see the Saints' defensive front get more pressure without having to bring the extra man to blitz all of the time.

If not Spags, I would like to see them sign Nolan over Del Rio, because Nolan is much more inventive in his schemes and has the ability to surprise offenses even in the latter weeks of the season when the opposition already has tons of film to watch and prepare. And best of all, his inventiveness does not involve just coming up with exotic blitz packages like it seemed to have boiled down to with GW.

I also wonder if Sharper would be interested in a secondary coaching position?

neugey 01-17-2012 11:04 AM

I think Ron Zook is available and just got fired by Illinois. I think it might be wise to bring him back in as D Coordinator. He now has lots of college head coaching experience and has a good read on the talent in the Big 10 and SEC for the draft. Dang if it wasn't for Spurrier he wouldn't have left us in the first place.

Zook had coached up Pierre Thomas and Martez Wilson for us.

If not, I think we should hire someone fresh and full of ideas from the top college ranks. Or a promising assistant from another pro team. Doesn't have to be a big name.

st thomas 01-17-2012 11:10 AM

del rio is a no brainer, if payton has no knocks on him. i believe your looking at the next saints D.C. thats if he accepts. then it would be nolan. del- rio would bring back a spirit that the saints have'nt had since the 90's. gw made it work for a year. then the whole league figured his schemes out. from ball striping to blitzing the s.s. i don't believe that st. louis rams fans are that excited about having him, not after what happened in N.O. the last couple of years. you can say its what he had to deal with in talent that killed his schemes so be it. see ya in st louis coach. and thanks for a super bowl and a half. u were there almost.

NOLA54 01-17-2012 11:11 AM

Del Rio.

Luda34 01-17-2012 11:14 AM

Del Rio he's the smart move I think.
