Gruden trying to build the Raiders of old ?
TAMPA - It's safe to assume now that Bucs General Manager Bruce Allen and Coach Jon Gruden indeed are trying to rebuild their team in the Oakland Raiders image.
Allen all but admitted as much Friday, when he said that in acquiring receiver Joey Galloway from the Cowboys, the Bucs were picking up a modern-day Cliff Branch. ``When [we looked] at Joey Galloway [on tape], Jon and I both saw Cliff Branch,'' Allen said, referring to the speedy Raiders receiver of the 1970s and early '80s. ``He's got that type of rare speed - with strength. When we saw that, we decided we had to do whatever it took to get him.'' What it took was a one-year, $2 million contract offer that also gives Galloway the chance to make an extra $600,000 in performance bonuses. That and disgruntled receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Galloway comes to the Bucs as a result of a long-awaited trade that reunites Johnson with Bill Parcells, the coach he flourished under with the New York Jets at the beginning of his career. http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGAFT9P51SD.html |
