If Ellis is cut, do we have to pay his salary?

Which brings up a question.
If we cut him, his cap hit is 2 million. If we keep him, his cap hit is 6 million. So basically keeping him only costs us 4 million for 2012. Thats not a ton of money for a "decent" DT, and the player we sign to replace him will be at least 4 million. IMO its cheaper to keep him, this year. |

I mean there are a lot of DTs on the FA market this year, and it is not guaranteed he would land another job with another team if he was to be released, so they might be able to strong-arm him into a favorable contract. |

I'd vote for anyone who sacked Drew this year. This year, that was a very good trick.

What do any of you think we could get if we trade Smith and Ellis, I could go for freeing up cap space and a few picks, he!! I'd throw Vilma in this also??

But the fact is that he hasn't been producing on par to what he is being payed, so it is highly unlikely he'd attract many trading partners. And the same goes for Ellis: not many teams would be willing to pay him $6M for the production hes been giving the past couple of years. Also, he only has 1 year to go on the current contract, so a team trading for him would probably have to negotiate a new contract with him before they would finalize a trade for his rights. If they would only take on the existing contract - which might be the case with a team that needs to take on salary to meet the cap floor, since the earlier info suggested that there would be a cap floor in place for next season - they wouldn't give up anything substantial for a one-year signing. But, I'm no expert on how trade deals get done in the NFL - I know much more about them on the NHL side. |

man one so-so year for ellis and everyone has him on the block. His first two years everyone was gaga over him. keep him
Smith was not his old self this year and while cutting him seem like the move we will not get that much cap relief till he signs else where and even then we are on the hook for the difference. proceed with caution. trade will? have to be tied into a draft day deal imo or the takers will be looking for a cheap deal |
