Osi Umenyiora

:) Is a free agent this year. He and Spags were very very close. Osi even stated at the beginning of the season that he would even go to the Rams to play for Spags. How you like them ****ing apples? I speculate Osi will be a Saint. With our cap room and Loomis being who he is I think it is as much as a done deal. You watch. Osi may even take us over a higher bidder just to be on a championship team with a DC he knows and loves. I know we have priorities to sign first, but we can make enough cuts to get it done.

W. Kovacs 01-19-2012 10:00 PM

I would LOVE to get him on our team...no way we fit him under the cap...IMHO....

I don't agree, I see a lot of good things from Ellis when watching the D-line play, he is very solid yet unspectacular. I think that might be something a new DC could change.

I'm all for bringing in Osi Umenyiora, that would be a great move.

He really isn't worth the salary he is paid with the current contract... his 2012 cap hit would be $6.26M and that does not reflect his productivity on the field. If Spags feels he can work with Ellis then fine, but I really hope they'll restructure his contract in that case, so that the cap hit would be closer to $3M.

FireVenturi 01-20-2012 08:57 AM

And Cam J would have a real pass rusher to look up to!!!

I don't want him, Spags might. To much of a headcase for me.

2012 NFL Free Agent Defensive Linemen

Quote:

2012 NFL Free Agent Defensive Linemen

Robert Mathis (IND) - DE - In a big offseason for the Colts, no defensive free agent is more important than Robert Mathis who has publicly stated his discontent with the lack of a long-term extension. The Colts defense relies upon quarterback pressure and Mathis is an enormous part of that. It'll be interesting to see if the Colts can scrounge together enough money to keep Mathis.

Antonio Garay (SD) - NT - Just as quickly as they lost Jamal Williams, they've replaced him at nose tackle with another Pro Bowl caliber player. It's crucial to the defense that they retain Garay to anchor the defensive front.

Calais Campbell (ARZ) - DE - Campbell is an important part of the defensive front for the Cardinals. His triangle numbers are off the charts and he has shown marked improvement overall as a football player over the past few years. His productivity would be hard to replace for a defense that can't afford to lose more talent.

Jason Jones (TEN) - DT - When healthy, Jason Jones is one of the league's better interior pass rushers. He has an explosive first step in getting upfield and disrupting a quarterback's ability to step up into a clean pocket. The Titans have allowed Albert Haynesworth and Jason Babin to leave at the top of their games, but re-signing Jones makes too much sense here.

John Abraham (ATL) - DE - The Falcons went out this past offseason to acquire Ray Edwards to improve the pass rush. Though Abraham is aging will lose a fraction of a step each year from here on out, losing his ability altogether would be a huge blow for the defense.

Cliff Avril (DET) - DE - Avril has been a member of the Detroit D-Line revolution under Jim Schwartz and Ndamukong Suh. He's an explosive pass rusher off the perimeterÑperhaps Detroit's best. Even so, the Lions line has had no problem getting to the passer regardless of who they play at defensive end; so while retaining their best exterior pass rusher may seem important, it's probably less so considering the coaching staff and the offensive attention the interior linemen garner.

Aubrayo Franklin (NO) - NT - It was little alarming that Franklin received as little interest as he did this offseason, receiving only a one-year deal from the Saints. He probably won't even garner as much attention as he did last season after moving to a less glamorous 40 front for interior linemen. Depending on his production this year, he could be a nice under-the-radar acquisition.

Sione Pouha (NYJ) - NT - The Jets aren't in a position with great depth in their front 7 where they can afford to allow productive starters to leave. Securing Pouha should be one of the organization's first objectives before they decide how to improve their roster through external acquisitions.

According to the info I have Smith's cap hit for next season is actually $9.75M ($7M base; $2M signing bonus; $750K other bonuses) - and yes it is far too much for his productivity whether it is $8.75M or $9.75M.

dizzle88 01-20-2012 01:05 PM

From that list there are loads of DE's available, one that jumped out at me was Andre carter of NE, he looked awesome as the season ended.
Wish Hali of Kansas city was available, that dude is a beast! Wonder if we got rid of will smith and sed Ellis we could get Mario Williams?

Rugby Saint II 01-20-2012 01:10 PM

With a new coordinator this might be the last hoorah for Will Smith.

SmashMouth 01-20-2012 01:18 PM

That NT from SD looks decent

Antonio Garay

I don't know about him... the season ending quad/knee injury he suffered against Denver didn't look too good and with an older player like him - it's always very uncertain how'll they rehab.

Also, NE played a 3-4 defense, which might not give a good assessment of how he would pass russ in a base 4-3.

Though it is fun to dream but we all know Osi is not going anywhere. As much as I would like to have him and a guy like Avril, I am not going to hold my breath.

gandhi1007 01-20-2012 03:36 PM

Mario Williams is also on that list.

Wow wow wow, this guy should be thrown in jail for stealing that much money from the Saints.

If Ellis is cut, do we have to pay his salary?

papz 01-21-2012 01:46 AM

No we take a cap hit but we don't pay his salary.

WHO_DAT_CAT 01-21-2012 01:47 AM

I'd vote for anyone who sacked Drew this year. This year, that was a very good trick.

Which brings up a question.

If we cut him, his cap hit is 2 million.
If we keep him, his cap hit is 6 million.

So basically keeping him only costs us 4 million for 2012.

Thats not a ton of money for a "decent" DT, and the player we sign to replace him will be at least 4 million.

IMO its cheaper to keep him, this year.

I'm hoping that if Spags finds him to be someone he can work with in order to improve his overall game and productivity - they'll work out a restructured deal, which would keep him with the team f.e. for 3-4 years, but with a lower base salary ~ 3M.

I mean there are a lot of DTs on the FA market this year, and it is not guaranteed he would land another job with another team if he was to be released, so they might be able to strong-arm him into a favorable contract.

halloween 65 01-21-2012 04:50 PM

What do any of you think we could get if we trade Smith and Ellis, I could go for freeing up cap space and a few picks, he!! I'd throw Vilma in this also??

hagan714 01-21-2012 06:26 PM

man one so-so year for ellis and everyone has him on the block. His first two years everyone was gaga over him. keep him

Smith was not his old self this year and while cutting him seem like the move we will not get that much cap relief till he signs else where and even then we are on the hook for the difference. proceed with caution.

trade will? have to be tied into a draft day deal imo or the takers will be looking for a cheap deal
