Contract discussions between the Saints and Drew Brees are underway. It sounds like they are going well.
“There is no doubt in my mind” a contract will get finalized, Brees said on the Dan Patrick Show Thursday. “It’s pretty straight up and should be done here in the next 4-5 weeks.” We’ve written a few times about all the unrestricted free agents in New Orleans. If Brees is right and he can complete a deal before free agency starts, the Saints will be able to use the franchise tag on a player like Marques Colston or Carl Nicks. Drew Brees expects new contract before free agency | ProFootballTalk Wouldn't expect otherwise. We're going to keep all three unless Colston gets a Fitzgerald type deal from someone else. Book it. We can franchise either Nicks or Colston. I have a feeling we'll lose at least 1 of them because another team will pony up for either. Probably Colston is most vulnerable.... which means he might also be targeted for the franchise tag.

The thing with Colston is that he plays in our system... which in my opinion, diminishes his value a little bit. To some extent, look at Lance Moore. Teams had a chance to snag him up multiple times, and none have. I don't believe anyone will grossly overpay for his services... which should enable us to match any offer out there. I think franchising Nicks is pretty much a given. I willing to bet almost anything Brees will have a saying a big impact on bringing back both Nicks and Colston... whether it's taking less money or structuring it to where he's still going to be paid by the Saints 10 years down the road.

I like the thought here papz but I am still feeling that Colston is vulnerable. Protecting Drew as well as signing him is key thus Drew and Nicks will more than likely be the priority. Colston is a great target for Brees and I do feel Colston will be sorry if he leaves because Drew is a big part of the reason for his success.

I think if we have to let some one go it would be Nicks. With the way the Saints have developed young linemen since 2006, I think that one of the guys waiting in the wings or another young free agent (for less money)could be developed fairly quickly. I do however think that they ALL want to be in NOLA with a chance to win a few more rings and will do everything to get the money right for all of them.
