The Saints will more than likely use the franchise tag this offseason for the first time since they tagged former DE Charles Grant in 2007. But don't expect them to do it until closer to the March 5 deadline because they will be trying hard to sign Drew Brees to a long-term deal rather than tagging him.
Drew Brees is the most obvious candidate in the NFL to be franchise tagged if he and the Saints can't come to an agreement on a long-term contract before the March 5 deadline. If the Brees deal does happen, the Saints could then tag either G Carl Nicks or WR Marques Colston; both will be highly coveted UFAs. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports Last edited by Saintswrath; 02-19-2012 at 03:33 AM.. |

Would be a bad move using the tag on brees, last thing we want is for him to be unhappy with the team by using the tag on him, come on loomis - get a long term deal sorted

PAY THE DAMN MAN! Tag Nicks and re-sign Colston. Cut Smith if need be. Restructure Vilma and Ellis. We can handle this.

This is what I've been saying. Whether or not we sign any of the other FA's, we've got to sign Drew. If he wants more money than us being able to re-sign Nicks and Colston or even just Nicks, well Drew will be the one with his arse on the ground to pay for that, but they just need to pay Drew what he wants and try to replace the other players in FA and the UDFA and Draft. That will more than likely take us out of contention for another Super Bowl for the remainder of Drew's career here but hey, at least we'll have a few more good seasons, maybe even winning seasons, but no playoffs etc. Hate to see Colston go but we've got Joe Morgan who I think can step right in and maybe be even better, plus we have AA whose been doing very well with his opportunities and there are at least 2 very good 6'-5" WR's that we could get in the draft for insurance so
All Drew's BS about wanting to keep the team together is just BS so lets just get on with it so we can do what we can with damage controll. ' |

If Brees insists on milking the Saints for more money than he deserves then I tag him and start preparing for life after Brees.

The only problem I see the Saints signing Brees to a massive contract is they are thinking about what happened to Payton Manning. It might be some clause in what has been presented that both parties can't agree on, if so I could see both sides reasoning. I want Brees back 100%, signed to a contract that finishes his years out as a Saint, at the same time I want the Saints protected 100% in case a situation happens like the Manning thing. In the end Brees should retire as a Saint and the organization will chase Superbowls like we have always done with or without Brees. I love Brees but I love my Saints {win or lose} more.

All these reports do is stir up BS to get the fans riled up. We all know they will get a deal done and putting a tag on Brees is not even an option. You don't just tag one of the best QB's in the history of the league, who the hell else can replace him? Even if Peyton Manning was injury free and an option I still would pick Brees over Manning. By tag I mean just a one year deal that is.
Don't forget beyond football what he has meant to the WHO DAT Nation and New Orleans! |
