About compensatory picks

Thirty-two compensatory draft choices were awarded by the league, positioned from the third to the seventh rounds. Cincinnati was awarded the highest of this year's compensatory picks, No. 96 at the end of the third round. Of the 16 teams that have been awarded compensatory picks, the New York Jets, Philadelphia and St. Louis received the most — four each.

Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year — 2003, in this case — is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. Compensatory picks are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed is covered by this formula.

Picks 253 through 255 are considered supplemental compensatory picks because they were awarded to fulfill the number of draft choices permitted by the CBA.
