Does Brees talk out of both sides of his mouth?

To cameras and media he says he is worried about keeping the team in tact out of one side of his mouth...then out the other side he doesnt sign his contract deal cause he wanted 5 mil more per year? WTF I really want the whole and factual story on this. yes he has an agent but he has final say so. i just dont get it. im sure im over reacting...but i really feel like we are about to take a huge step back here. Our defense has been on the decline for the last 2 years with scheme partly to blame but players mostly to blame. our best LB in maybe the leagues weakest LB corp was garbage last year and is arguably lost more than a step. our highest paid DE wouldnt start on some teams in the league. with that said...i feel like we are about to go into rebuilding mode, having to find a new guard, receiver, LB, DE, DT, Safety (maybe). If it took condon this long to get to the point where they had to franchise brees how long is it going to take him to agree to pay the "highest paid" guard in the league. this negotiating period has regretfully and ashamefully made me think differently of brees. i know what he has done for the team and what he has done for the city but come on man...5 mil more per year??? that is a good players salary for a year. its a starting caliber LBs salary.

I hope there is more to the story than what we're hearing. I love Drew and all the things he brings to the table on and off the field....However, I am a Saints fan before I'm a Drew Bree's fan. Again, I love the dude, but no player is bigger than the team or the city (and the people in it) for that matter!!!

He wanted 5 mil more a year for the first 3 years instead of the back end. Thats how understood it anyway. Which is really chicken shat for someone who has been saying he has the best interest of the team in mind.

Since 2006 he has won as many Super Bowls , and more playoff games, and has broken more NFL records than either of the 2 QBs that are already paid more than him.

During the lockout, it was Brees that paid for the un-offical OTAs, in 2011 he played half the season with a strained MCL.

If Brees wasn't as good as he is, then Nicks wouldn't be worth as much money as he is demanding.

Why is everyone wanting Brees to take less but do more; namely get the Saints back to the Super Bowl?

They all say they "want to keep the team together." Or they are a "team player first." But when faced with $14 million per year or $18 million per year you know what most people would choose.....

I cannot believe the poison coming out of the fans on this site. I know Drew Brees wants the money because I'm not naive, they all do. But maybe he does believe in keeping the team together too, however it is not down to him alone, other people have to do their bit. And when did the offer last year happen? I never heard anything about it and I never trust 'sources say...' news. I think we all wanted Brees to say 'I will take 1 million a year so you can keep all my teammates together and give them big money'. WHY SHOULD HE?! And who knows how the contracts were done and how Condon was manipulating the situation. I thought we were supposed to stand together in times of trouble but it seems to me that somebody is being vilified for asking for what he clearly deserves and I think they have treated him poorly. We were all saying how great this man is and what he means to the city and the people, and how he has raised the team and expectations to a level never before seen and what has been on his shoulders is immense...as long as he doesn't ask for money for it like any other player would. And anyone who doesn't believe he is about the team, you are fools. But he is allowed to look out for himself too. By the way, for those of you wishing ill on this man, shed your black and gold and walk away to Dallas, or maybe even Atlanta. We don't need fans like you. We are Black and Gold and, though understandably angry at what is going on with our beloved team, lets keep our heads about it please.

The offer may have come before the Saints went into the playoffs and Brees said he was shelving his contract during the postseason so they woudn't be a distraction.

The 'Why wasn't this taken care of earlier' crowd need to realize that the Saints, on offense especially, have several key components.

Teams like New England, and Indianapolis, basically only have Brady and Manning to worry with when contract talks come around. When is the last time there was a story about a guard on those teams that had several teams ready to sign him if he became a FA?

The Saints have Brees, Nicks, Colston, Meachem, Porter and, coming up soon, Jimmy Graham.

IMO, the fly in the ointment is the agent for Brees.

As far as Nicks and Colston/Meachem go, after Brees, Nicks is the most crucial of that group.
