Brees livid about being tagged...

1 Attachment(s)
Drew Brees is "livid" about being franchise tagged and not receiving a long-term contract, according to WIST-AM in New Orleans. The radio station cites sources in the Brees camp that he will not sign the franchise tag deal. Brees and the Saints have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal. If a deal isn't struck, Brees must sign the franchise tag deal or hold out.

Report: Brees livid about being tagged, won't sign tag offer - New Orleans Saints - CBSSports.com RapidReports

Until I hear those words come from Brees himself, well, call me a skeptic!

saintfan 03-05-2012 05:24 PM

Yep, lets wait until he's quoted as being 'livid'...and if he is quoted as being 'livid' then color me unsympathetic.

FinSaint 03-05-2012 05:27 PM

He can hardly be "livid" about it since it was his agent who forced the Saints' hand in tagging him, because they couldn't afford the front loaded $23M/year contract.

I doubt that the report is true.

Euphoria 03-05-2012 05:29 PM

I don't care... Bree's made himself the face of the league being involved in the labor agreement so he only has himself to blame.

Look at it from a business perspective... why in the hell would you NOT use the tag on Bree's you get him for something in the ball park of 16 millions and save 7 to 8 million of cap space. Makes perfect sense to me.

I just can't see him being unhappy with the situation unless he is pissed at his agent, lol.

Besides... completely honest here after this year... we move on from Brees are better seriously be looking at his replacement... He's 34 already. Its going to be all down hill for him.

saintfan 03-05-2012 05:29 PM

I love one of those comments after the article. Trade Drew to Indy and draft his replacement. DO IT.

:cheering: RG3! RG3! RG3! :cheering:

Seer1 03-05-2012 05:47 PM

Now that is the difference between him being able to spend $49,000 a day and $63,000 a day.....

ChrisXVI 03-05-2012 05:49 PM

This is the beginning of the end of the supremacy guys... I know, I know... Overreacting, blowing things out of proportion, blah, blah, blah. The ****'s hit the fan and I'm mortified by the way our organization has handled every aspect of things.

No I agree with you to a degree.

This is an all or nothing year. If we don't win it then totally scrap the team and start rebuilding. Bree's isn't getting any younger.

onebyone 03-05-2012 06:06 PM

I am not going to believe this until I hear him say it on live tv, followed by a full on temper tantrum.

If he is really livid, I am really confused. I mean, what did he think we were going to do if he via his agent won't negotiate a bit? They pretty much set this up.

ChrisXVI 03-05-2012 06:09 PM

I definitely don't think it's going to be an "all" year when the proverbial hammer comes down on us.

dizzle88 03-05-2012 06:20 PM

this offseason is already the worst i can remember for our team

We've had people sounding off from in-house (carl nicks and apparently drew brees now)

All this dog the bounty hunter BS and all the prices the team will pay because our home games arent in new england.

Brees turning down the chance to be the highest paid player and then getting the franchise tag, he only has himself to blame, he should have taken the money when he could, it is very disappointing because I thought brees would make this go smooth.

Think of what spags is thinking, coming to a team that has a great chance to get to the superbowl and was pretty much only a defensive gameplan away from getting there.
Now everything is imploding one by one

Srgt. Hulka 03-05-2012 06:21 PM

I gotta bad feeling about this. This is NOT good at all.

Danno 03-05-2012 06:22 PM

Maybe he's livid at Condon?

Fire him Drew, fire him now!

Euphoria 03-05-2012 06:29 PM

I don't this this is the worse off season!

Look guys chill. So they take a draft pick or two we still can make up for it in Free Agency. The only real player I am worried about is Vilma and lets face it if he is suspended for 8 weeks or longer... I say cut him. Free up a roster spot for new blood via FA.

Yeah I said it. I don't know if his best days are ahead of him anyway. We have a better DC coming in and going to play REAL DEFENSE for a change. Lets see what he can do.

The Bree's situation is what it is. That will work out no need to fret about something that is unknown but due to the situation they are still negociating by Bree's not signing. Does him no good to sign that thing until practices begin and all... so sit tight and let it all work out.

Rugby Saint II 03-05-2012 06:45 PM

It's hard to be mad at yourself.......find someone to point a finger at.

Beastmode 03-05-2012 06:46 PM

Brees understands that there is life after football so I seriously doubt the livid claim. Is he unhappy about it, of course. Loomis should have given him close to what he wanted. There is still some wiggle room so who knows...I just know Loomis better make the man happy. Without Brees everybody is SOL including Loomis. Pay the man and enjoy the ride for a few more years. We can recover from the bounty fresh scandal but having your best player upset is unacceptable.

Speedy Ron 03-05-2012 06:46 PM

i can believe it...if he isnt then why hasnt he signed it already??? since this microscope has been on brees he has shown a different side then we have ever seen...starting to sound spoiled

Really?

papz 03-05-2012 06:51 PM

Back lash for not getting a long term deal hammered out. You can't be the ultimate team guy and be the most selfish one at the same time. If true, he's just trying to save face.

SloMotion 03-05-2012 06:57 PM

He could get a long-term contract or whatever next year, couldn't he? By tagging Brees, they free up some cap space for F/A negotiations and to maybe get some help on the defense.

How livid could he be if the Saints are making a run at the SuperBowl next season?

FinSaint 03-05-2012 07:21 PM

He could, but if he's a man of his word, he won't sign the tag tender and, therefore, he'll sit out the next season if they can't work out a long term deal this off-season.

I doubt that in that scenario the Saints and Brees would be trying to work out a long term contract after the fact, and I don't know what sitting out an entire season would do to Brees' market value.

yeah, but by sitting out, he just hurts himself as well ... what's he got? Until June/July to sign that thing ... everyone will come around by then.

SaintsBro 03-05-2012 07:30 PM

Whoa whoa whoa hold up a second. This is the same Kaare Johnson who also had an "impeccable source" who said the Hornets sale was a "done deal" to an out of town buyer, and it's been weeks since he "broke" that story and absolutely nothing has come of it. So...

ScottF 03-05-2012 07:35 PM

I am also livid. Maybe Drew and I are soul-mates.

No, I guess not, because my fav Saint is still Archie, and when I say I will always love the Saints and want what's best for the team, I mean it.

You get no argument from me there, but he has stated that he won't play under the tag, so if the sides can't come to a long term decision by June 15th (I think) - he is forced to either stand by that proclamation or give into the Saints' decision. But, by giving into playing under the tag, he would in affect display that he can be strong-armed into agreeing to unfavorable terms. This could be something that would hurt him further down the line during his next contract negotiations - whomever they would be with.

I still hope and believe that Brees and the Saints will be able to come to terms on a long term contract before the tender deadline - one which will be lower than the $23-24M for the initial years that has been suggested to be what Brees' side is asking for.

... I see what you mean, I didn't realize he had said he wouldn't play under the franchise tag ...

I think he said that, at least I think I read about it somewhere...

Who knows anymore what is what... so many threads in so few hours... http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit...sed/stupid.gif

QBREES9 03-05-2012 11:12 PM

Brees and the Saints have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal. Ok then July 15 you'll have a deal.

Drew your words ring HOLO. What about the team and keeping it together. Your not going to sit out.

NOLA54 03-05-2012 11:19 PM

I too want to hear & see Drew saying he is livid.

QBREES9 03-05-2012 11:22 PM

Lets go knock on his door. If anyone see him out in a resturant they should ask him. Hey Drew what gives ???? Drew you livid ?

Hell they'd do in that in New York.

QBREES9 03-06-2012 12:50 AM

Unhappy Brees doesn't intend to sign franchise-tag deal

New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees does not intend to sign the franchise-tag deal offered by the Saints, CBSSports.com reported Monday.

WIST-AM in New Orleans, citing sources in the Brees camp, reported that the record-setting quarterback is "livid" that he received the franchise tag.

..
Brees and the Saints can still negotiate a long-term deal, but if one is not reached by July 15 then Brees must either sign the franchise-tag deal or hold out.

The franchise figure for quarterbacks in 2012 currently stands at between $16 million and $17 million, but that could change depending on what happens with any potential Peyton Manning deal.

The Saints' decision to use their tag on Brees adds another twist to what has been a surprisingly contentious round of negotiations between the team and its quarterback, who broke Dan Marino's NFL single-season passing record two months ago and led New Orleans to its only Super Bowl championship two years ago.

Crusader 03-06-2012 01:53 AM

If he doesn't sign it put Chase in and lets move forward.

Looking at Brees stats with the Chargers compared to with the Saints I wonder how much Paytons system have to do with his success.

WHO_DAT_CAT 03-06-2012 02:35 AM

Somethin' just doesn't sound right here. There has got to be more to this story than money.

Crusader 03-06-2012 02:36 AM

Easy way to fix being "livid". Just sign the damn contract offer they gave you. It includes more money than you could ever spend.

dizzle88 03-06-2012 04:34 AM

Lost a lot of respect for Drew this offseason, he only has himself to blame for getting the franchise tag by turning down our first offer

SloMotion 03-06-2012 05:44 AM

... then he sits I guess. Too bad, but the world/league/team can't revolve around one player. Wish it could, wish it could be Drew, but the reality of the situation is the Saints will play the 2012/13 season with or without him.

Hope he has a change of heart.

ScottF 03-06-2012 06:52 AM

drew sitting really isn't an option either- it will leave us with 15-16 million in unused cap, and our qb will be brady quinn or rex grossman

Supertek 03-06-2012 06:54 AM

Personally I blame the Saints for letting this monster grow like it has. The deal should have been done seasons ago at least two seasons. They were playings the odds like I stated before and continue to do so. I knew there was a real good chance thet they were going to tag Brees. Usually after hard feelings like this it is hard to mend the fences. Brees will have to accept this in the end I just find it hard to think he will actually sit out this year. If he does sit then I agree that some personal relationships between Brees and management have deteriorated to the point that Brees does not want to play for them anymore. Then as stated we have to move on. I think there are a lot of people who do not want the Saints in the hometown superbowl.

darstep 03-06-2012 07:09 AM

What is livid?
It's a media word that helps sell news, and stir up the wires,
and set the fans on fire. Its the other bookend to the word "bounty".
As if Drew didn't see the tag on the table since mid-season last year.
C'mon everybody.
Drew and Peyton and some other guy were holding up the talks last year
with franchise tag litigation. It didn't go away then and he hates that he has
to wear that collar (with the leash).
He will try to save face and do what he said, or in this case - not do.
I kind of opened my mouth and asked, "What could be worse?", "What else can go wrong?".
It's all my fault.
